Darkly elegant pathos with a cajun flavor

Never having heard of Lucius Shepard, I bought a used paperback copy of "Green Eyes" on the strength of its unusual back-cover plot synopsis and the fact that it could be had for 50 cents...a somewhat ordinary procedure of mine for reasons I'll not go into. In other words, I approached this novel with very little in the way of expectations and, perhaps for that very reason, was simply amazed at my good fortune. This story, itself one that does not easily fit into any genre niche, is without a doubt one of the two or three most poignant modern novels this reader has ever had the pleasure of encountering...made "Papa Kurt"(Vonnegut) sound tired and blase'. Embued with vivid, striking imagery...plot turns impossible to forsee, yet satisfyingly logical...complex in its multilayerings, but as smooth as a luminous egg...an absolutely staggering ending, very hard to describe. I finished the book feeling awed and humbled. Snippets of dialogue, fantastic scenes, emotional depths, these and more swirled through my mind for weeks afterword. If Lucius Shepard's powers were not yet fully matured when he wrote this, I daresay he may write THE best fantastic story of our generation.

Introduction to Lucius Shepard

I read this book when it was first published because of a Damon Knight Blurb on the cover: "I wonder if anyone else knows what a good writer Lucius Shepard is?" Being a Damon Knight fan I bought the book on his recommedation. Because of the book I read all of Shepard's books.
Green Eyes was one of those delightful books you find now and then that you read non-stop. It appears to be three novelettes of differing genres put together to make a novel, but woven together with such skill it becomes a whole. Because of the three separate parts to the novel I had no idea where Shepard was going with this story. If you are lucky enough to find a copy of this book I envy your first reading.

Unclassifiably Brilliant Horror/SF/Fantasy

This is Shepard's first book, and he knocks it out of the park. It begins with a fascinating concept: if you can revive the recently dead, for just a few minutes, what will they tell you? What have they seen while dead?

And then, the story takes off in completely unexpected ways, and the book becomes completely unique, spanning genres and confounding expectations.

If you like horror, if you like SF, if you like fantasy, this will fulfill your expectations.

Ésta es una generación que solo quiere oír lo que va de acuerdo con sus deseos carnales, egoístas y egocéntricos; que vive para complacer toda demanda del “yo” de manera inmediata, que no quiere límites ni restricción alguna. Por eso hoy, la homosexualidad es el derecho de cada individuo a elegir cómo vivir; el aborto es el derecho de la mujer sobre su propio cuerpo; el divorcio es el derecho a buscar la propia felicidad; el amor al dinero es el derecho de la persona a superarse y tener todo lo que quiera; las falsas doctrinas en la Iglesia son el derecho de cada uno a interpretar la Palabra de Dios a su conveniencia. Vivimos en un tiempo donde el lema es “si te hace bien, si se siente bien, hazlo”; no importa si daña a otro, si destruye todo a su paso, si deja una herencia de maldición, lo importante es “sentirse bien”.

La Biblia dice “...que en los postreros días vendrán tiempos peligro- sos. Porque habrá hombres amadores de sí mismos, avaros, vanagloriosos, soberbios, blasfemos, desobedientes a los padres, ingratos, impíos, sin afecto natural, implacables, calumniadores, intemperantes, crueles, aborrecedores de lo bueno, traidores, impetuosos, infatuados, amadores de los deleites más que de Dios, que tendrán apariencia de piedad, pero negarán la eficacia de ella; a éstos evita” (2 Timoteo 3:1- 5). La razón de estos tiempos malos es precisamente la degradación moral de la raza humana, es la corrupción moral y ética, la perversión que ha sufrido el carácter del ser humano; las cuales son irreversibles. Esta expresión “amadores de sí mismos”, en griego es altos (yo) y fileos (amor, beso). Es como besarse de amor a sí mismo. Ahí comienza la depravación de todo el carácter humano, porque éste no fue hecho para amarse egoístamente a sí mismo, ni a hacer de su “yo” un dios o ídolo. Entonces, la raíz de la depravación moral es el amor al “yo”, es ponerse primero, por encima de cualquier necesidad ajena, de la voluntad de Dios y de las leyes de Su Reino. Y de ahí procede que el apóstol Pablo los describa también como “amadores de los deleites”; esto hace a su vez, que tengan una “apariencia de piedad”; es decir que por más que parezcan ser buenos, viven para su propio “yo”.

Team work and creative problem solving are still the building blocks of successful design, but new design concepts and novel mathematical programming models based on computer-based tools have taken out much of the guesswork. This book presents the new revolutionary knowledge, taking a systematic approach to design at all levels.

Systematic Methods of Chemical Process Design is a textbook for undergraduate and graduate design courses. The book presents a step-by-step approach for learning the techniques for synthesizing and analyzing process flowsheets. About the Author

LORENZ T. BIEGLER is the Bayer Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. A graduate from Illinois Institute of Technology, he holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He has been a Presidential Young Investigator and has received the Curtis McGraw Award of ASEE.

E. IGNACIO GROSSMANN is Head and the Rudolph R. Dean Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon. A graduate from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico, he holds master's and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from Imperial College, London. He has also been a Presidential Young Investigator and has received the Computing in Chemical Engineering Award of AICHE.

ARTHUR W. WESTERBERG is the Swearingen University Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, he holds a master's degree from Princeton and a doctorate from Imperial College, London. Besides winning numerous professional awards, he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His book Process Flowsheeting is the standard text in the field of process simulation.

Great book, could be better!

This is the book that inspired me to pursue my Masters degree at Carnegie Mellon (where all 3 authors teach)...

It's a great book, but you do need to work a lot of exercises and problems on your own-- in that respect I say it could've been better-- a solutions manual or such would be great!

Given that the authors are among the best people in the field of optimization, and having seen them day-to-day, I reckon they just don't have enough time on their hands to do all that. In any case-- it's a great buy!!

Excellent presentation of optimization algorithmics

The first chapters deal with economics, really elementary material. However, it is a worthwhile discussion of plant sizing and costing. I liked the later chapters on optimization: HENS, MINLP, scheduling, flexibility in processes, etc. Traditional books on optimization will not help you here because they will not show you how to set up your optimization problem. Systematic Methods does this! The book also contains some discussion of liquid-liquid separations.
As far as content is concerned, the book deserves a 5, but there are problems which reflect its first edition status. The index needs reworking (where is the entry for Fenske's equation?), and there are numerous typographic errors which mar the appearance of the presentation.
The book is not example intensive. The reader is expected to think, and to follow the given example requires paper and pencil, not just casual glances. What should be appreciated is that this book is written by the leaders of the field, and the material is absent in other texts. Much of the text reflects research conducted by the authors.

About the Author
Roza El-Eini was an undergraduate at University College and the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, gaining a B.Sc. (Hons); and has an M.Litt. from the Faculty of Modern History, Middle East Centre, St Anthony's College, Oxford University; and a PhD. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her PhD. was awarded First Prize in a National competition in Israel for the year 2000 by the Dr Aharon and Advocate Josef Ben-Shamesh Fund. Dr El-Eini is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

A nice study

This is a compact and important study of all the aspects of landscape during the Palestine Mandate(1917-1948). It covers agriculture, Land laws, forestry, the land system, the partition plans and there is a special case study of the Shephalah, the Palestine Piedmont area on the Coastal plain. An important contribution to the field of study of Palestine in the 20th century, an excellent and interesting view of the Mandate, one that seperates politics from reality, a welcomed addition therefore to reading on Palestine and the land that became Israel.

It is about life in the coal ministry with Mamata Banerjee, Shibu Soren and Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was also the Prime Minister. A masterpiece in pictures!!

I have read many pablo escobar books, and they carry little to no pictures at all. This book does an amazing job at detailing the life of this notorious ganster. We see him with his bodyguards, his family and by himself. This book is worth every penny, i would gladly pay more if it need be. The author does an amazing job at putting this book together, it's a true work of art. Oh, and the book isnt a mere 30 pages, oh no, it's at least two hundred pages or more. Fantastic...
