Reading this is like striking oil

I was one of five people who started a weekly writing group last year. At first we languished a bit, trying to find a way to get ourselves going. Then one week I brought in my little stash of word tickets I had made after reading Poemcrazy. It was as though a sudden rain had made the desert bloom. We have been pouring out poems and stories and vignettes at a rare clip ever since.
One of the most important things about the techniques the author presents is that they force one away from contemplating one's own belly-button, so to speak, and bring one's attention to the limitless possibilities for poetry that spring forth when chance words and phrases put the imagination in overdrive. Too often writers of my generation think that poetry has to be about our deepest and most dramatic emotions, which often leads to some pretty deadly stuff being committed to paper. But when you pull out word tickets that say things like "fronds" and "slashed" and "cutting up the remnants," it's hard to be self-absorbed. In fact, it's hard to be anything but deeply original.
Everyone I have introduced to the author's exercises and methods has fallen in love with them. Even my six-year-old nephew became enamored and proceeded to rename everything and everyone in his environment--a procedure that created some hilarious yet apposite new names. (I am now "Needs to sing," his sister is "Pistachio," his grandmother is "Finding secrets....")

This Book Soothed My Spirit!

Reading this book was soothing to my spirit, calming, a balm.

I like Wooldridge's writing style very much; I would describe it as gentle, casual and very clear.

I love how she consistently makes references to the outdoors, nature and the pastoral way of living throughout.

Within its pages you will become acquainted with such things as: wordpools, word tickets and the image angel.

The book is divided into 5 sections; each section averages right around 10 to 12 chapters. All the chapters are either short or very short. I found that very refreshing, like sips of cool water. Take a small drink, stop and think. Take another sip... At the end of most chapters there is a "Practice" which is nothing more than a simple non-threatening creative exercise or suggestion; they are genuinely good ideas in my opinion, practical and clear.

I think that the overall message from the author is that poetry is freedom when all the restrictions are removed and when you allow yourself to look for poems everywhere, because that's where they are, everywhere.

I recommend this book without any reservations.

Poemcrazy: The Best Book I've Ever Read!

A friend of mine picked up this book when we were in a book store, knowing that I had come to an almost sudden halt in my poetry writing for the past year or so after having been a poet for four or five years. I was pretty depressed about my writer's block, so I thought, "What the heck," and I bought the book. Not long into the book, which is magnificently written, I began to write again. I haven't stopped since, and my poetry has made massive improvement. The book helps to inspire and recreate that passion that writers can sometimes lose in the midst of the stresses of our days and our constant state of change and growth. --And best of all, it's fun, easy reading!

Being of Italian decent, I was interested in this story as it detailed the era in which my grandparents immigrated to the US. It is not a page turner and the author's style is less than riveting, but it is history and should hold one interest enough to read to completion.

Will Margo's music over-shine his music career? Will Margo's music be her # 1 priority, more than Simon? Can she fully commit to him and him to her???Will we get a HEA? Read to get these questions answered!!! This book is well written and fast paced novella, only compliant wish it was longer. Perfect!

The only word to describe this book.

Though only a novella, this book is filled with a lot. Funny. Romantic. Informative. It gives us a better understanding of Simon & Margo’s relationship and what makes them tick. And how they were truly made for each other. Even if it took them some time to figure that out themselves. We also get a little insight to who, what and why Lila is...well ...Lila.

I Am COMMITTED To This Series!

Simon Kagan, lead singer for the band Oblivion, is head over heels for Margo Reece, his Violin Girl. He's ready to take things to the next level, the FOREVER level, but Margo is running scared. What's a man in love to do when his lady is afraid to commit?

I am a huge fan of authors Taryn Elliott and Cari Quinn, so when I found out that they were part of the Love Ever After collection, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Their Lost In Oblivion series is one of my absolute favorites, and COMMITTED (Book 3.7), the novella from the series that appears here, does not disappoint. I am so in love with Simon and Margo and their story. These two are like flash paper; the heat between them is scorching and all-consuming. And, as far as Margo is concerned, sure to burn out, once Simon is ready to move on to someone new.

For a short read, COMMITTED packs the usual Taryn/Cari punch. Simon and Margo are each others' true north, and the scenes between them so vivid that I was right there with them. I cannot get enough of these two, along with the rest of the Oblivion crew, and I need the next one now, because I tear through each one like it's a race. COMMITTED is another 5+-star read for me. If you're not reading this series, and these authors, you are missing out, so add them to your TBR. You will NOT be sorry.

Declaring sexual drives to be fundamentally irrepressible and blameless, she challenged the Platonic and religious orthodoxy of her time, which condemned all forms of sensual experience, denied the rationality of women, and relegated femininity to the realm of physicality and sin. Human beings, she argued, consist of body and soul, sense and intellect, and honorable love must be based on this real nature.



By exposing the intrinsic misogyny of prevailing theories of love, Aragona vindicates all women, proposing a morality of love that restores them to intellectual and sexual parity with men. Through Aragona's sharp reasoning, her sense of irony and humor, and her renowned linguistic skill, a rare picture unfolds of an intelligent and thoughtful woman fighting sixteenth-century stereotypes of women and sexuality.

As part of a series on important women writers in the period 1300-1700, this booklet provides the first English translation of an important Renaissance dialog on the nature of human love. D'Aragona (1510-56), a wealthy courtesan and poet, daughter of a Roman courtesan and (probably) Cardinal Luigi d'Aragona, argues that human sexual drives are irrepressible and that a moral form of love must recognize both its sensual and spiritual aspects; here she challenges Catholic teaching and the prevailing Platonic philosophy of her day. The introduction is the thing

The introduction to this volume, from the Other Voice series out of the University of Chicago Press, by Rinaldina Russell is exceptionally good. It is helpful in tracing the path of Tullia d'Aragona's education that took her to the understanding that allowed for the writing of this tract, and it is a tract, a philosophical tract, argued in the most proper dialogic method with Tullia as the antagonist.

The argument is stated: "Is there love within limits?" While this argument deals with the subject, love, it is not really about love. Varchi, the protagonist of this argument, maunders around in his "questio" dialogic method, in a manner that I kept thinking of as Renaissance scholasticism, with the incessant splitting of hairs, carping about the meanings and comparative meanings of words used in the dialogue.

Footnotes in the book were a must and were handled well, giving the reader all she needed to prevent confusion in the narrative and giving edification and reminders of the philosophical questions implied and their premises. The purpose is not to solve the question, or come to an answer, but to investigate, peruse, belabor, and fragment in the best dialogic manner. This disassembly accomplished, the true cleverness in the arguments comes in one-up-manship, catching the other out in misspeaking, and revealing the true nature of love, which is its difficulty.

What a treat: an honest-to-goodness play! Budding actors and drama coaches will enjoy this lighthearted story about the awkwardness and excitement of young love in a Mexican American community. Perhaps the word "enjoy" is an understatement ... I do believe that young actors will have a hard time not laughing along with the audience once the curtain goes up. Gary Soto, author and poet extraordinaire, breaks a leg with this fast-paced, delightful look at dating from both the male and female perspectives. The transcendent theme and its helpful glossary of Spanish words and phrases will give this play broad appeal. Bravo!

Grade 8-11?A hip, funny play. When Patricia, a high school junior, agrees to go to lunch with ninth-grader Rudy, the apprehensive boy seeks dating advice from his friend Alex, who says, "Just level with her. Tell her you're sorry you look like you do." Even less useful advice comes from Rudy's Uncle Juan: "Worry about what you have to say, little Romeo....The first time I went with a girl, man, I freaked her out. I told her that I thought I had been captured by a UFO." Now even more nervous, Rudy asks his mother for money, only to hear, "You think money grows on trees?" Unfortunately for Rudy, his luck does not improve by the final scene in which Alex, Uncle Juan, and Rudy's mother all appear at the restaurant to witness the date. Soto again proves he knows what makes young adults laugh, like throwing up huevos con weenies (scrambled eggs with hot dogs) and hearing about G.I. Joe beating up Ken. Since the Mexican-American cast spouts frequent Spanish words, several lines of dialogue could be lost on an audience unfamiliar with the language. The visual clues of a live performance might serve to clarify some unfamiliar words. With performance notes, a descriptive character list, and extensive scene notes, young actors should be able to perform this entertaining play with or without adult assistance.?Denise E. Gr. 6^-8. It's not Novio Boy, the cool cat from Soto's Chato's Kitchen, but Rudy and Alex from The Pool Party, who are featured in this seven-scene play. Rudy, now a ninth-grader, asks an "older woman," an eleventh-grader, out for his first date. In preparation, Rudy seeks advice from his best friend Alex, startles his mother with news of this recent development in his social activities, and asks his "Chicano loafer" and guitar-playing Uncle Juan for financing, but is somehow surprised when they all end up at the restaurant on the night of his big date. Soto's contemporary play is lighthearted and fun to read, but the liberal use of Spanish, which flavors and authenticates the dialogue, requires frequent trips to the extensive glossary at the end and may make the play difficult to perform for students not comfortable speaking Spanish. However, Novio Boy is, true to its title, a sweetheart of a play. Annie Ayres

Awesome comparison to Romeo and Juliet for lower readers

This is an excellent resource for comparisons to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I would recommend it to educators looking for an optional play to use with low level readers at the high school age. It is high on the interest scale due to the coming of age theme along with the addition of interesting family relationships to add to the similarities. A wonderful addition to a classroom library anywhere.

Novio Boy Review

The play "Novio Boy," by Gary Soto, is really great. It's about a boy named Rudy, who's in ninth grade. His life is fine, except that the girl he likes is in eleventh grade. He has to build up a lot of courage to ask her out. It's really funny when Rudy's best friend, Alex, is telling him about when he went on a date. In my class, we connected that part to the movie "Napoleon Dynamite," and did a little impromptu. Overall this play is really funny and is great for class or for just reading by yourself (though it's more fun to act it out). This book is really just one big coincidence, and if you read it, you'll find out what I mean.

Novio Boy takes place in Southern California .Rudy the main character is an ordinary 14 year. old with his best friend Alex .But when Rudy meets pretty and smart Patrica in Roosevelt's high school cafeteria he plops on an extra helping of frijoles / beans. But she's 2 years older and Rudy doesn't know what to do! So he asks her out on a date to Steaks, Steaks, y mas Steaks! Where a hamburger costs like $5.00 more than McDonalds. Then he realizes he doesn't have enough money for his date. So he goes to his mama and gets $10.00 and advice about if its ok to date an older woman. He really doesn't get anything from her even though she's 2 years older than Rudy's papi . So he goes to his Uncle Juan and he pulls out some advice about not to worry about money and worry about what your going to say! And latter he gives Rudy $10.00 he finds behind Sarah. His good luck girl so everything goes pretty good with Patrica. (except everyone he knows is there).So everything goes spectacular and Estella likes Patrica. I like this book because its cute, Rudy and Alex are so funny, and its kind of like a teen thing kind of book that you can relate to. A true all star book .least I think so.
