Traditionally, medicine has involved therapies chosen according to clinical guidelines, often arrived at through clinical trials which categorized patients into patient groups. Such clinical guidelines would dictate that all patients within a specific group should be treated in exactly the same way. More recently, the paradigm has shifted towards personalized medicine, and in future, individual treatment plans will depend more on the specific characteristics of individual patients, including genomic data. This book presents the proceedings of the 9th scientific eHealth conference, the eHealth Summit Austria, held in Vienna, Austria, in June 2015. Among the main topics addressed at the conference were: active and ambient assisted living (AAL); eHealth education; electronic patient and health records; ethical legal and economic aspects of eHealth; ICT for integrated treatment, research and personalized medicine; patient portals and personal health records; semantic interoperability of information systems; and visualization of clinical or epidemiological data. One of the first fields of application for personalized medicine has been oncology, with current diagnostic tools including molecular risk factors, biomarkers and individual genomes. The next step in personalized medicine will be to extend these to a more general, personalized health approach. Such individual risk assessment and preventive strategies promise to have a huge impact on our healthcare systems, and this book will be of interest to all those involved in healthcare research, provision and practice.

Lion's Pride: The Turbulent History of New Japan Pro Wrestling, by Chris Charlton

Japan has long been the most respected territory in the field of professional wrestling, and the most appreciated by hardcore fans worldwide. New Japan Pro Wrestling is the country's most recognisable brand. It attracts scores of fans to annual Tokyo Dome shows, has made household names of its most prominent talent, and is increasingly in demand by a rabid international audience.

Yet NJPW's 40+ year history has been a rocky one. The company has endured strong competition, scandals and riots, and for a time it seemed like poor decision making would sink what was once a national institution.

For the first time in English, Lion's Pride: The Turbulent History of New Japan Pro Wrestling explores NJPW's triumphs and tribulations. Starting with the origins of pro wrestling in post war Japan, Lion's Pride covers the company's inception in 1972, through its boom in the early 1980s, its influence on the medium at large in the '90s, and its downturn and subsequent revival in the last two decades.

Alongside a detailed and informative history are essays detailing the intricacies of Japanese wrestling psychology, how NJPW's key players shaped the company, and much more besides.

A crucial reference guide for any wrestling fan, Lion's Pride offers an entertaining and insightful glance behind the scenes of the 'King of Sports'.

About the Author
CHRIS CHARLTON's first introduction to Japanese wrestling was on a shaky VHS copy of the 1994 Super J Cup. Five years after that viewing, he moved to Japan, where he has lived for the past decade. Immersed in the wrestling culture, Chris trained in the UK, where he wrestled for Midlands Pro Wrestling and NWA: UK Hammerlock. In Japan, he wrestled for various small independents before realising his talents were perhaps best served away from the ring. Since 2012, he has co-hosted Live Audio Wrestling's monthly Japanese podcast with WH Park, as well as commentating extensively on videogames and sub cultures at kaijupop.com. Chris currently lives in Yokohama with his wife and son. This is his first book.

Excellent book.
By Robby O'Daniel
Excellent book. I subscribed to Kindle Unlimited just to read this book, and it was awesome. As someone who just started watching NJPW with WrestleKingdom 9, it was a great history of the company. Would be interested in a physical copy if price (currently $35 price tag) goes down at some point. Definitely would read again.

Excellent history and cirque of an iconic promotion
By T. Willitts
A long time wrestling fan from the 1970s onward, ice been aware of NJPW, mostly through their cooperative work with NWA/WCW and ROH. As such, my familiarity was vague at best, so reading a more in depth explanation and history was something both entertaining and educational.

Written in a very easy to read style, this book covers both the positive and negatives of the company, its various experiments and highs and lows. Highly recommend to ask wrestling fans.

A Fantastic History Of Japanese Pro Wrestling
By Nate
I first became aware of Chris Charlton through Live Audio Wrestling and his podcast there, Japanese Audio Wrestling. Being a big fan of New Japan, having a semi-regular podcast in English is a godsend. When I heard that he was writing a book on the history of the promotion, I was pretty stoked to check it out.

"Lion's Pride" is an excellent history of the promotion. It starts with Antonio Inoki leaving the Japan Pro Wrestling Alliance in 1972 and starting his own promotion, which he would call New Japan. It leads through the company's highs and lows, achievements and missteps, their relationship with foreign talents and how they develop their own Japanese talent. It covers all the major players in the company over the years: Inoki, Fujinami, Choshu, Hashimoto, Sasaki and right up to the present crop of New Japan talent (Okada, Tanahashi, etc.)

Charleton's writing style is informative and easy to read. It is a fun trip through the history of the best wrestling promotion in the world. And having such a history in English is amazing. The only complaint that I even remotely have about this book is that I wish it was longer. I enjoyed it so much that I wish it would've been twice as long.

This is a highly recommended read for anyone with interest in Japanese wrestling or in the history of the sport in general. Well done.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Edited by legendary horror writer Straub, whose works tend to vary from the stereotypical horror stories of recent decades, this collection of 12 unusual and terrifying tales strays from the formulaic bloodbaths that stock the shelves of bookstores everywhere. The collection features stories by such established writers as Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Carroll, Straub and Stephen King, whose early story The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet is read by John Lee with such earnestness and delight that it makes fans remember why they fell in love with King's prose to begin with. It also offers plenty of fresh voices in the genre. The cast of narrators is equally expansive, with a new voice tackling each new tale and always managing to get it right. A true standout is Mark Bramhall's reading of Dan Chaon's story The Bees. A Doubleday hardcover (Reviews, Sept. 8). (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
With an introduction by the much honored Straub (Ghost Story), this collection can be dubbed New Wave horror, considering that most of its 24 stories were published fairly recently and it includes contributions by celebrity horror writers. The tales mostly eschew buckets of blood, instead employing mood and suggestion in the manner of Edgar Allan Poe. "Little Red's Tango," Straub's lengthy quasigospel of a record-collecting obsessive, complete with beatitudes and a seductive demon, ably represents the editor's definition of New Wave horror. All the stories honor Poe, like the moody, contagious delusions of Stephen King's "The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet." The genre can be literary, as exemplified by Tia V. Travis's vengeful "The Kiss," Thomas Tessier's surprising "In Praise of Folly," and, probably the most demonstrably Poe-like, Ramsey Campbell's "The Voice of the Beach," featuring a neurasthenic narrator, suffocating suggestibility, and nearly palpable imagery. Brian Evenson's creepy "Body" and Dan Chaon's touching "The Bees" culminate in the horror of bad deeds catching up. The other stories included are without exception excellent. Recommended for all libraries.—Jonathan Pearce, California State Univ.
Stanislaus, Stockton

From Booklist
In this sumptuous, 25-story anthology, horror veteran Straub eschews the genre’s common macabre trimmings in favor of literary style. The authors featured represent Poe’s legacy with a level of craftsmanship equal to that of the best writers in contemporary literature. Most of them—the likes of Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Ramsey Campbell, and Straub himself—are already familiar to horror fans, while a few, such as Dan Chaon and Brian Evenson, may be more recognizable to mainstream readers. The selections include King’s early “The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet,” about an editor whose typewriter is infested with crumb-eating elves called Fornits; Melanie and Steve Rasnic Tem’s award-winning “The Man on the Ceiling,” a faux-autobiographical account of the uncommon terrors haunting a family; and Ben Percy’s eerie “Unearthed,” describing the madness afflicting an amateur archaeologist when he digs up an Indian corpse. Full of unusual themes and finely nuanced prose, this is a collection to spend time with and savor slowly. --Carl Hays

A great horror collection
By Robert Busko
Poe's Children: The New Horror, an Anthology edited by Peter Straub is a terrific collection of short stories by a varied collection of authors. Straub includes one of his own stories, Little Red's Tango, a story that is sure to grab the reader's attention. I have to admit that I had a little difficulty getting into the rhythm of the story, but once I did I found Little Red's Tango to be truly worthwhile. Also included is a great story by Stephen King, The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet, another story dealing with an author who is convinced that his typewriter is possessed. I think this is King at is "short story" best.

I was also pleased to see that Neil Gaiman was included with his October in the Chair. Here's a list of all the stories included in Poe's Children:

The Bees Dan Chaon
Cleopatra Brimstone Elizabeth Hand
The Man on the Ceiling Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem
The Great God Pan M. John Harrison
The Voice of the Beach Ramsey Campbell
Body Brian Evenson
Louise's Ghost Kelly Link
The Sadness of Detail Jonathan Caroll
Leda M. Rickert
In Praise of Folly Thomas Tessier
Plot Twist David J. Schow
The Two Sams Glen Hirshberg
Notes on the Writing of Horror: A Story Thomas Ligotti
Unearthed Benjamin Percy
Gardner of Heart Bradford Morrow
Little Red's Tango Peter Straub
The Ballad of the Flixible Bullet Stephen King
20th Century Ghost Joe Hill
The Green Glass Sea Ellen Klages
The Kiss Tia V. Travis
Black Dust Graham Joyce
October in the Chair Neil Gaiman
Missolonghi 1824 John Crowley
Insect Dreams Rosilind Palermo Stevenson

Also included at the end is a brief biography of each of the authors.

I suspect that like many readers, I have just a wee bit of difficulty reading when the story/author changes. Authors write with their own cadence. It always takes me a page or two to get in step, but other than that, I look forward to new anthologies, especially in the horror genre.

The best story in the collection, in my opinion only has to be October in the Chair by Gaiman, followed closely by Cleopatra's Brimstone. Picking these over the others is really pretty arbitrary since all of the stories are grabbers.

All things considered, Poe's Children is a unique collection by a diverse group of authors.
I highly recommend.

What is horror, anyway
By Zachary
In which Peter Straub sets out to broaden the umbrella of “horror” beyond the stereotypical blood-and-guts sensationalism typically associated with it. He succeeds at this so well that I had a hard time figuring out exactly what made some of these stories fit into the genre at all.

Dan Chaon - “The Bees” - A husband and father is haunted (literally or metaphorically?) by the first wife and child he abandoned during his drinking days. Impressively dark and downtrodden, although one wishes the two wives were sketched out a bit more actively. 3.5/5

Elizabeth Hand - “Cleopatra Brimstone” - The second time I’ve realized after starting a story that I had read it before in Redshift and promptly forgotten about it. This story follows a beautiful young entomologist who travels to England after surviving a sexual assault, at which point she proceeds to pick men up at bars and clubs and turn them into butterflies by having sex with them. I guess there’s something to be said here about a woman reasserting her sexual agency, but weird stories about transgressive sexuality are just not my thing. Also Hand devotes huge chunks of time to talking about raves and clubs. 1/5

Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem - “The Man on the Ceiling” - I enjoyed the conceit of this one - Melanie and Steve, a married couple, take turns metafictionally (?) relaying the effect that Melanie’s lifelong terror/hallucination of a ghostly presence has on their life together, but the story kind of fizzles out without doing much of anything with that conceit. 3/5

M. John Harrison - “The Great God Pan” - Decades ago, three college friends took part in some sort of magic ritual which has proceeded to ruin the rest of their lives, despite the fact that none of them can remember what actually happened that night. Like “The Bees,” this is a very dark story, and the reader is also swept into this sort of claustrophobic hopelessness where the characters find themselves as they suffer the consequences of this action that remains entirely obscured throughout. Harrison later expanded this story into the novel The Course of the Heart, which I wouldn’t mind reading. 4.5/5

Ramsey Campbell - “The Voice of the Beach” - My favorite story in here, and also the one most comfortably situated within the weird/horror tradition - highly reminiscent of “The Willows” and itself echoed later in China Mieville’s “Details.” A reclusive man living on the beach has a friend, recently recovered from a nervous breakdown, come and stay with him. They notice odd patterns and details about the beach, find an abandoned village (complete with a seemingly-incoherent fragmentary diary), the friend (and the narrator!) act increasingly oddly, and things unravel quite nicely. 5/5

Brian Evenson - “Body” - Having enjoyed what I’ve read of Evenson’s in the past, this was a big disappointment. A fragmentary and disjointed account of a man imprisoned and tortured by some monks, and then something about women and tearing shoes apart and... ? 1/5

Kelly Link - “Louise’s Ghost” - A story about two lifelong friends, who are both named Louise, no last names given, so the reader is left to differentiate whom is being discussed by their quirky actions. I would expect to hate this, and it did wear awfully thin, but by the end I couldn’t help enjoying this story a good deal nonetheless. One Louise has a daughter, while the other has a ghost. Things get sad. 3/5

Jonathan Carroll - “The Sadness of Detail” - An interesting setup - an angel recruits an artist to recreate images for an increasingly senile God - that ends right after revealing said setup. 2/5

M. Rickert - “Leda” - A modern retelling of the Greek myth of Leda and the swan, no more, no less. 2/5

Thomas Tessier - “In Praise of Folly” - An appreciator of architectural follies travels to a remote town in New York in order to photograph a garden done up generations ago as a mini-Italy by an eccentric industrialist. Up until the climax, nothing seems amiss (aside from a single reference when he arrives in the town), and this means the horrific element (which is well-done, such as it is), is entirely divorced from the narrative leading up to it (also well-done, such as it was). This was probably the author’s intent, but there could have at least been more of a thematic connection. 3/5

Review
''Here is a historian with the vitality and drive to match his subject. A reporter of the first rank, he can clothe the dry bones of history with the living stuff of which today's news is made.'' --Chicago Tribune

''The majority of the stories of the Alamo fight have been partly legendary, partly hearsay, and at best fragmentary. It has been left to John Myers Myers to present an exhaustively researched book which reveals the chronicle of the siege of the Alamo in an entirely different light . . . Myers' story will stand as the best that has yet been written on the Alamo . . . It's a classic.'' --Boston Post

An excellent tribute to real hearoes of American History!
By Michael J Woznicki
In American history there are a great number of battles that have shaped the United States into the country we have become, the Alamo is among them. This audio recording is one of the most complete accounts of that historic event that Texas to independence.
Myers take you on a journey back to the days of Jim Bowie, William Barret Travis, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston and Stephen Austin. The journey begins with the American immigration into the Mexican Territory of Texas and how the Spanish rule was law of the land.
The history books fall short when recounting the exploits of the over 180 men who gave their lives in the cause of freedom, this recording gives them the just and well deserved place in the annals of history. The recording is 5 1 ½ Hour cassettes and well worth the time to listen to each.
If you wan to learn what really happened in the mission turned fort spend the time and money to get this recording, you won't be disappointed. John Myers Myers is certainly the foremost expert on the subject.

Informative, classic, inspirational
By Librarian
First published in 1948, John Myers Myers' THE ALAMO is the first of three outstanding, older Alamo books; the other two are THIRTEEN DAYS TO GLORY, by Lon Tinkle (1958) and A TIME TO STAND, by Walter Lord (1961). These three foundational classics serve as prerequisite reading for all subsequent Alamo books for which they paved the way. Admittedly, more recent ones have the benefit of many years' worth of additional research; they share new discoveries, revised interpretations, keen insights, and some challenging conjectures; and they provide newly translated and valuable (but sometimes questionable) accounts by enemy combatants and other Mexican eyewitnesses. Many of those new Alamo books are not only comprehensive but especially well-written, and there are many good ones. I particularly like THE ALAMO STORY by J.R. Edmondson, THE BLOOD OF HEROES by James Donovan, TEXIAN ILIAD by Stephen L. Hardin, BLOOD OF NOBLE MEN by Alan C. Huffines, EYEWITNESS TO THE ALAMO by Bill Groneman, and THE ALAMO REMEMBERED: TEJANO ACCOUNTS AND PERSPECTIVES by Timothy M. Matovina.

As good as those more recent books are, newer is not always better, and some modern authors feel a need to promote a particular cultural agenda, provide an extreme level of socio-political correctness, or even demonstrate an in-your-face anti-Americanism that can make their Alamo books excessively polemical and iconoclastic; one such book is EXODUS FROM THE ALAMO by Phillip Thomas Tucker. Armed with what he apparently felt was new information he could use to cast aspersions on the valor of Alamo defenders, Tucker chose to impart his "revelation" within the milleau of a Santa Anna-praising, "racist warfare" (his term) diatribe pitting "Anglo-Celts" (his term) against Mexicans. (He conveniently overlooks the fact that many freedom-loving Mexicans fought alongside their Anglo compatriots in the Alamo).

What Tucker "revealed," though no secret to today's knowledgeable Alamo buffs, WAS unknown to Myers: That on Day-13, the last morning of the siege, after the final Mexican assault successfully took place and all was hopelessly lost, some surviving Texians apparently executed a contingency plan of sorts in a desperate attempt to escape being slaughtered. Whether it was pre-planned and formally organized or spur-of-the-moment and spontaneous is debatable, but it resulted in a significent number of Texians fleeing to a swampy area just OUTSIDE the Alamo walls, there to be cut down by Mexican cavalry on the lookout for such breakouts. There were likely others, elsewhere, who did likewise. If Tucker meant this to somehow sour the Alamo mythos, his purpose failed. A last-ditch survival attempt when the battle was hopelessly lost and all was chaos in no way diminishes the heroic status of any Alamo defenders, either individually or corporately, and whether inside or outside the compound, they still died "at the Alamo."

As you read Myers' or any other Alamo account, bear in mind, its defenders were not participants in a suicide pact; rather, they were brave citizen-soldiers who dutifully remained at their posts to fight until overwhelming circumstances realistically dictated otherwise. With the exception of appointed messengers and Louis Rose (presumably the one man who didn't cross Travis's line to stay), every defender who fought at the Alamo DID die there. Santa Anna had previously let it be known he would not be taking any prisoners. When, according to an account of dubious veracity, a handful of Texians -- supposedly including Crockett -- surrendered and were taken to him, he ordered them to be slain on the spot. (Myers clearly states this is a sheer fabrication, but even so, it truthfully reflects Santa Anna's character. When the entire Texian force of some 400 men at Goliad surrendered to him, Santa Anna marched them all out to be shot en masse.) Essentially, only women and young children, an adult Mexican male who claimed he was being held prisoner, and one or two non-combatant black slaves were spared when the Alamo fell.

Myers carefully considers all the information available to him in 1948 to provide one of the first, detailed, big-picture, Alamo accounts. Admittedly, the first few chapters of early Spanish and Mexican history, though necessary, can be taxing, as can be some of the intricate and tumultuous political maneuverings between the earliest Anglo colonists of Texas and the ruling governments. To some Alamo aficionados, this may be familiar enough to skim, but to others, perhaps encountering this information for the first time, it may be eye-opening (or sleep-inducing). That accomplished, however, Myers finally gets around to describing the Alamo compound and its defenders, men of diverse backgrounds from many U.S. states and various different countries. Some were already living legends (like Bowie and Crockett) but most were relatively obscure. Few of them were saints, and all were mere mortals with hopes and dreams of bettering their lives. But coming together in this particular time and place, they bravely chose to unite against an overwhelming Mexican force personally led by a ruthless, vain-glorious, death-demanding dictator.

Early books may give the impression that once "trapped" inside the Alamo, its defenders had little choice but to stay and, therefore, fight to the death. That is not true. Athough Myers does not say so, we now know that during much of the siege, the sprawling Alamo complex was surprisingly porous, and people (including Mexican spies!) came and went nearly up till the last day -- meaning that no one was necessarily irrevocably trapped inside its walls. For thirteen days, on a daily basis, Alamo defenders virtually renewed their commitment to remain to fight, and having done so, they ultimately went down -- not in defeat and not in retreat, but in glory, to be rightly hailed as martyrs to the cause of freedom they espoused. For Santa Anna, on the other hand, the Alamo's fall was a costly, ignoble, and very short-lived victory; it soon led to his defeat, to Texian victory at San Jacinto, and to the creation of the Republic of Texas. The heroes of the Alamo did not die in vain, and debunkers of history can never successfully besmirch their honor though they may try to do so. But because they try, we need rousing accounts like Myers' to continually remind us (and the generations that follow us) of their valor.

Although Myers' ALAMO does not reflect the most recent scholarship -- for that we turn to the newer books -- he still gets everything right about those things that REALLY matter, and today when we "Remember the Alamo," THIS is essentially how we remember it. Myers' book deserves to be read -- as do the others I mentioned above (especially Walter Lord's, which, despite its age, is arguably the very best of ALL Alamo books, old or new). But after reading it, take a few minutes to contemplate these two questions: Would YOU have stayed to fight at the Alamo? Is there a present-day Alamo in YOUR life about which you feel strongly enough to defend to the death? Your answers to those questions will give you a better understanding of the commitment of the Alamo defenders.

You may wish to compare this edition to the $9.99 Bison ebook edition; both are impeccably-formatted, but this one costs consideraby less (so it is the ebook version I purchased to replace my two well-worn physical copies). Except for a vital layout of the Alamo compound, however, the maps in both editions are too small to be of any real or practical use. There are no photographs or illustrations.

A Tale Of Heroes When We Need Them Most
By Joseph A. Aycock
Mr. Myers wrote this book in 1948, and based it on careful research into the facts as they were known at the time. THE ALAMO is a story of heroic men, dedicated to the cause of freedom, sacrificing their lives willingly for that cause. Bowie, Crockett, Travis, and all the others with them, were the stuff of legends, and as such we should remember them. This is a story to rival THE ILLIAD in its nobility of character and cause. Sadly, later research has shown that these giants were, like the Trojans, at least partialy the product of myth, and their cause was not quite so noble. But this in no way detracts from the telling of a great tale, and, if the men of the Alamo were not quite as tall as we imagined them, they were still men deservant of our admiration. They died for what they believed in, and this is their story, from the first man who ever bothered to compile the whole thing in one place.

A very powerful play addressing the South African situation.
By Holly A. Lenz
In My Chindren! My Africa!, Fugard tells the story of a white South African girl who becomes involved in debates with a black South African boy and his teacher, but as the racial tension increases, tragedy becomes inevetable. Fugard tells a powerful story which not only addresses the racially charged South Africa he is from, but race relations and the need to realize the differences between people of race are only skin deep.

It made me cry!
By Lisa Gansky
My Children! My Africa! was the first book I've read ever to make me cry--so much towards the end that I had to put it down. It is the touching tale of a white South African girl who befriends a black South African boy and his teacher, amidst a time of strong racial tension. Their teacher helps them to learn that even though others may be at war, they still have the chance to pave the road to a new, better Africa. Fugard's best play ever!

Powerful, but flawed, play
By Daniel Schmidt
"My Children! My Africa!" is a flawed, yet powerful play first performed in 1989 in South Africa. Fugard is a talented playwright, but his assumptions are somewhat off.

The text centers around three characters set in "State of Emergency" 1984 South Africa. Isabel, a white, precocious Afrikaner; Thami, a black, independent African; and Mr. M, the teacher, caught in the middle of events not so out of their control. The story is somewhat about reconciliation and the power of education and discipline. Yet, things fall apart as Thami rebels in his mind against the Bantu education and the Western teachings (taught to him by his teacher Mr. M). In the end, all three pay the price for their friendship, but that is not the most of it.

In all honesty, the play taken with a grain of salt is moving and I felt my chest tighten and my heart race as Fugard effortlessly moves the reader through this trying time. But upon reflection, problems begin to emerge.

One is the assumptions are raised. Fugard is obviously anti-apartheid, but does the future of South Africa, as he was predicting in 1989, lay with those like Thami or those like Isabel. Thami, who begins to be swept away by the movements in Southern Africa (notably Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique) is given a negative aura by Fugard, as if he lets his emotions rule his better reasoning, exemplified by Mr. M. As one critic points out, Fugard, in the end, voices the beliefs of the white, middle class South Africa through characters like Isabel and Mr. M. The violence, which is "inevitably" what Thami will adopt, will only hurt South Africa's future after apartheid even more.

The other is the historical inaccuracies. The book was written in 1989, but set in 1984. Fugard uses the play as a weather-vane and a crystal ball in which he attempts to predict the future by rewriting the past. He misrepresents 1980s South Africa and movements like the UDF, essential to the ending of racial hierarchy in 1994, by having Thami break off Isabel and his friendship because blacks and whites were not allowed to mix and be friends. Fugard also uses history, on which Thami builds his new found historical consciousness, to downplay the positive roles of social movements in South Africa. Then there is the story of Mr. M, which Fugard rips right from the newspapers (he even keeps his same name) yet is not given proper justice.

The reason the play got 4 stars instead of 3 resides in Fugard's character, Thami. In my opinion, Thami transcends the near stranglehold that Fugard attempts to impose upon him. The events Fugard banked on us forgetting: Klipstown in 1955, Sharpsville in 1960, or Soweto in 1976. Don't follow Mr. M's bogus mantra of "correctly" reading or voting or seeing things - because more often than not, you're being misled in ways that cannot be seen. Instead, read with an open mind and let history guide you the rest of the way.

An Islamic Philosophy of Virtuous Religions: Introducing Alfarabi, by Joshua Parens

Joshua Parens provides an introduction to the thought of Alfarabi, a tenth-century Muslim political philosopher whose writings are particularly relevant today. Parens focuses on Alfarabi s Attainment of Happiness, in which he envisions the kind of government and religion needed to fulfill Islam s ambition of universal acceptance. Parens argues that Alfarabi seeks to temper the hopes of Muslims and other believers that one homogeneous religion might befit the entire world and counsels acceptance of the possibility of a multiplicity of virtuous religions. Much of Alfarabi s approach is built upon Plato s Republic, which Parens also examines in order to provide the necessary background for a proper understanding of Alfarabi s thought."

Joshua Parens provides an introduction to the thought of Alfarabi, a tenth-century Muslim political philosopher whose writings are particularly relevant today. Parens focuses on Alfarabi’s Attainment of Happiness, in which he envisions the kind of government and religion needed to fulfill Islam’s ambition of universal acceptance. Parens argues that Alfarabi seeks to temper the hopes of Muslims and other believers that one homogeneous religion might befit the entire world and counsels acceptance of the possibility of a multiplicity of virtuous religions. Much of Alfarabi’s approach is built upon Plato’s Republic, which Parens also examines in order to provide the necessary background for a proper understanding of Alfarabi’s thought.

"Timely and essential to the understanding of Islam, this book explores a classical Islamic writer’s reflections on the leading topic in Islamic and Western politics today: In what way should Muslims think about, and to what extent should they promote, the expansion of Islamic religion throughout the world? The book is practical in nature and addresses specific topics in Middle Eastern politics with resources from Alfarabi that have been available for one thousand years, yet have been ignored all too often. What is so important is that Alfarabi shows, from within Islam, what Muslims need to consider regarding science, philosophy, politics, and other religions. Islam does not need to turn to European or North American writers to find its own greatest strengths—Alfarabi is one of their own." — Terence J. Kleven, Central College

"Parens offers an illuminating interpretation of Plato’s Republic, which is the model for Alfarabi’s political philosophy, and, in so doing, breaks new ground in Plato interpretation." — David Burrell, author of Faith and Freedom: An Interfaith Perspective

About the Author
Joshua Parens is Professor of Philosophy and Dean of the Braniff Graduate School at the University of Dallas and author of Metaphysics as Rhetoric: Alfarabi'’s Summary of Plato’s "Laws," also published by SUNY Press.

Al Farabi: A Reintroduction for Our Times
By George Greene
This review serves as a correction to the one star review.

In An Islamic Philosophy of Virtuous Religions, Joshua Parens seeks to introduce the political philosophy of Al Farabi, a tenth century Islamic philosopher, to the twenty-first century in which revolutionary Iran and Islamofascist movements aspire to a universal caliphate through jihad. As a Muslim, Al Farabi, who lived in a time of similar aspiration, wrote between the lines in an attempt to moderate these aspirations and promote religious tolerance. It is this type of writing which may assist an internal Islamic Reformation today. Joshua Paren's book is a book for both Muslims and non-Muslims today who struggle with these theological-political problems.

In this regard, this book's particular focus differs generally from the writings of Leo Strauss and Muhsin Mahdi on Al Farabi, the latter being Joshua Paren's teacher. Leo Strauss' writings are linked to his studies of Maimonides; whereas, Muhsin Mahdi's importance is that he broadened as well as deepened Strauss' insight/rediscovery through a critical recovery of Al Farabi's corpus and his scholarship culminating in his 2001 book Alfarabi and the Foundation of Islamic Political Philosophy which predates 9/11. Though Joshua Parens acknowledges his debt to his teacher in both in the Acknowledgements and throughout this book, it is not a derivative work but stands on its own.

The primary focus of Joshua Paren's study is The Attainment of Happiness, not the Principles of the Opinions of the Inhabitants of the Virtuous City as set forth in the one star review. (The Attainment of Happiness is the first part of Al Farabi's Philosophy of Plato and Aristotle.) Through Joshua Paren's close reading of The Attainment of Happiness accompanied with his deep familiarity of Al Farabi's other writings, he shows how Al Farabi seeks to moderate the ambitious through both (1) a cautionary tale and (2) a showing of the limits of reason. In a sense, it is Al Farabi's reenactment of Plato's Republic where Glaucon is replaced by "the talented and dashing young men the city is most likely to take advantage of and corrupt".

Although Joshua Parens considers his work by its title an introduction to Al Farabi, it is neither simple nor easy. One of its great strength is through his close reading of texts wherein he shows one how to read Plato and Aristotle, how Al Farabi read Plato and Aristotle and how we should read Al Farabi. It is no small task. While reading this book, one needs at one's elbow minimally Muhsin Mahdi's translation of Alfarabi: The Political Writings, The Philosophy of Plato and Aristotle in order to follow the argument. Joshua Parens considers this work as a felicitous translation though it is clear that he is familiar with Arabic since at crucial points he differs with his teacher's translation.

Joshua Parens is a much needed guide through Al Farabi's writings especially in our times when reason is under attack and all forms of unreason are on the rise.

Totally derivative
By Siobhan
The subject (Alfarabi's Platonic critique of Islamic doctrine) is interesting, but the book itself is misleadingly presented and unoriginal. An introduction to Farabi this is most certainly not. If you read it without much familiarity with his work, you'll be hopelessly confused. Parens is an indirect writer who focuses on only one of Farabi's works (The Attainment of Happiness) and jumps right into the argument without orienting the reader effectively to the relevant text. Deceptive marketing aside, this book is really just a monograph trying to bolster the esoteric interpretation of Plato and Farabi pioneered by Leo Strauss, whose own work on Farabi (see, as a starting point, "Farabi's Plato") you can find for free online. I advise you do so, rather than spending $15 on this.

Here are the major parts of Parens' argument. First, he argues that Plato's Republic is a cautionary tale rather than a prescription. This is a compelling argument, but it's not original at all. Second, Parens argues that Farabi was deeply versed in the Republic, and saw his own work on ideal states as basically extending Plato's own goals to the Islamic context (this was Strauss' original insight). Third, he picks two areas where he thinks Farabi is particularly critical of contemporary Islamic doctrine (jihad as offensive war and the limits of human knowledge), and parses them in exhaustive detail. This is the only part of his work that's original, and it can be summed up as follows: those things that Strauss says Farabi does? He does them in these sections.

Finally, he argues that Farabi envisioned a multiplicity of virtuous religions, each developing from a particular cultural context, and that Islam--like the belief system Plato proposes in the Republic--isn't well suited to governing a heterogeneous state. Thus, like Plato's city in the Republic, Farabi's virtuous Islamic realm is intended to be neither possible nor desirable. This is also piggybacking on Strauss.

There you have it all. Parens doesn't seem to read Arabic or add any particular expertise in Islamic philosophy (he relies almost entirely on Muhsin Mahdi's interpretive work, himself a disciple of Strauss) to build off the foundation Strauss established. To anyone familiar with Strauss and Mahdi, the result reads like a first-year graduate student's work, with Parens merely serving as a compiler for arguments other people have already made in much more elegant prose. It's about as close as you can come to plagiarism without actually crossing that line. While I think the ideas in question are very serious and probably right, Strauss and Mahdi do a better job of expounding them, and are far more accessible to those unfamiliar with Farabi.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The first six pages of this wrenchingly honest memoir of Hood's daughter's death and its aftermath read like a tightly controlled scream. All the platitudes, the dozens of words of comfort that people offer—time heals, she is in a better place—are interspersed with Hood's silent, furious responses to these lies, with special scorn for those who say, Are you writing this down? The death of her five-year-old Grace in 2002 was completely unexpected: an ordinary strep throat somehow ravaged the organs of her small body. Hood (The Knitting Circle) takes readers through the slow, jagged steps of dealing with grief. Unable to write, she first took refuge in endless knitting, then got a tattoo on Grace's sixth birthday. Hiding from the Beatles' songs her daughter had loved, she found them so ubiquitous that she could finally listen only to talk radio. Grace's little shoes stood sentinel at the top of the stairs and three years passed before Hood could bear to clean her room. But there is redemption at the end of this short, anguished book. Hood and her husband have a new daughter, Annabelle, adopted from China, and at last, Hood can celebrate Mother's Day, albeit with a strange mixture of grief and joy. (May)

From Booklist
How does one recover from the plenary grief of losing a precious five-year-old child? Novelist Hood’s answer is simple: one doesn’t. After her daughter died suddenly from an antibiotics-resistant strep infection, she just moved along with life, at first muddling through days and weeks of hearing but not comprehending the advice of well-meaning friends and family. Next, the grief began to shift from being her primary focus to second place, then into periodic episodes of overwhelming anguish. Hood’s sometimes-too-painful-to-read memoir bares all the raw emotions, from denial to despair to anger, that she experienced. The grief never really leaves, she says; it just stops eclipsing all else. Especially after she took up knitting, a pastime that occupied her mind in such a way that she couldn’t knit and grieve at the same time. Ultimately, she, her husband, and their son moved on and, it seems, finally found their way to a likeness of the happiness they once had. --Donna Chavez

“Comfort is novelist Ann Hood’s utterly harrowing, completely spellbinding memoir of losing her five-year-old daughter, Grace, to a rare form of strep in 2002. . . . [A] spare, gorgeously serpentine narrative. . . . Unforgettable.” (Elle)

“Comfort enriches our lives. . . . I will most likely never eat pasta with butter and Parmesan or cucumbers cut in perfect rounds . . . without thinking of Ann Hood and her daughter. And I have never met either one.” (Los Angeles Times)

“In graceful prose, Comfort bears witness to the heartbreaking particularity of her―of any―loss.” (People)

“Hood is larger than life, living, loving, and grieving on an operatic scale.” (New York Times Book Review)

A tear-stained hour with 'Comfort' will keep any parent straight for months.
By Jesse Kornbluth
"Comfort" is a very great book.

I don't think most people would read it if I paid them.

Consider: In April of 2002, Ann Hood's 5-year-old daughter spiked a fever. Rushed to the hospital, Grace was diagnosed with the kind of strep that ravages internal organs. In less than 48 hours, this sparkling, smart, cute, funny, loving girl --- a kid who embodied the entire glossary of childhood wonderfulness --- was dead.

You often hear: "There's nothing worse than burying a child."

Reading about it when the author is a master isn't much better.

Hood sugarcoats nothing. The book --- a love letter to a child forever missing --- starts with a chapter of all the things people tell grieving parents. Time heals. Give away her clothes, clean out her room. Take this drug. Have you read this? You look better.

And, because Hood had published some novels: Are you writing this down?

She does. Here. Finally. And, at the start, literally: Only the lies people tell me. There are no words for the size of this grief.

And the greatest of these lies? Time heals.

But Ann Hood doesn't heal. That's the plot of this 180-page memoir. Oh, she bought a journal, but she couldn't write, couldn't read, couldn't focus, couldn't cook, couldn't couldn't couldn't. If she didn't have a husband and a son, she might have drowned in a pool of tears.

And then there is the problem of time. Grace was so alive, she died so fast, where did she go? In memory, more real than the present, she's right here. But to step into her room, to drive past her school, to hear one of her favorite songs by The Beatles --- here come those tears again.

Someone pushes Hood to take up knitting. Well, why not? She fills a small room with yarn. And then: "I picked up my knitting needles. I cast on, counting my stitches. Then I swam, Gracie. I tried to swim to the other side of grief."

Does she make it? Well, she cooks pasta --- the shells that Gracie had loved --- and "the food did bring us comfort." There are desperate, hot, clinging nights with her husband. There is --- no surprise --- a frantic effort to get an explanation from a god who seems heartbreakingly silent. There's the graveside scene that is mercifully just a paragraph. And, though she doesn't say it here, she writes a novel, "The Knitting Circle", about a woman whose only child dies.

And then....but I don't want to spoil the ending. [If you must know, a Very Good Thing happens.] Everything changes. And then, some days, it's back to square one. "Grief doesn't have a plot," Hood writes. "It isn't smooth. There is no beginning and middle and end."

This is not an easy book to get through, and when you have, as we do, a 6-year-old girl in the next room, it's even worse. But I'm damn glad I read "Comfort". It's real and unadorned --- Ann Hood puts you in the room. This is great writing precisely because this isn't Writing, just a record of constant horror, occasional relief, and the power of time.

But enduring a book like this just for the writing --- that's for the hard-core reader. A more likely reason is that you're grieving, and you want to compare notes. Or that you're a parent, and this is your worst fear, and you can't resist finding out how grim it might be to lose a child.

As it happened, I read this book a day after our kid revealed that she was not quite the perfect goddess we had led ourselves to believe. I suspect there are a lot of parents who experience that daily. They're not disappointed with their kids, not really; they're just frazzled, beat up in their own lives, with no way to talk back to the perpetrators. And so they snap. Or get loud. Or tune out. Well, "Comfort" reminded me that we were blessed our daughter showed up here at all.

I would bet that a tear-stained hour with "Comfort" will keep any parent straight for months.

A Loving Portrait of Unspeakable Grief
By Morgan Callan Rogers
The courage it took for author Ann Hood to put into words a wordless grief merits more than five stars. But the fact that Ms. Hood has accomplished this with complete honesty and unalterable love, using the skilled craft she has so beautifully mastered makes this little book a giant. To lose a child is the worst sorrow a parent can know, particularly when that loss is sudden. What the author does is guide the reader through her process - from the numbing shock and its devastating aftermath, how it affects her as a mother, what it means to her family, to her sense of spirituality, to her marriage, to her every day life as she knew it then and knows it now, and the reaction from friends and complete strangers. This book is a tribute to a special little girl who loved the Beatles, cucumber slices, art, and dancing. It serves as a gift to those who might have staggered under the unbearable and lonely journey through intense sorrow. Hood's honesty with her reader keeps this book on track. She offers no solutions, but she does offer hope. And she offers her readers comfort in the passage of time, in the love and support of family and friends, and a way to move forward into a different framework that contains light and love, while holding on to the memory of someone beloved. This is an incredible book. I wish Ann Hood and her family all of the best and I thank her for the heart it took to weave this book together.
