Excellent introduction to Ego Psychological Theory

Dr. Goldstein's book provides students with a survey of the major contributors to ego psychological theory. To her credit, she manages to effectively communicate sometimes difficult material without resorting to the complicated jargon that one often finds in similar psychoanalytic texts. Ego Psychology and Social Work Practice 2nd Edition enables beginners to appreciate some of the insights of the ego psychologists without having to read and interpret the original texts. This would be a daunting task and unnecessarily laborious for a beginning student. It also provides more experienced clinicians the opportunity to review material germane to clinical practice or as an accompaniment to more advanced reading.

Eda Goldstein & Ego Psychology

Eda Goldstein does a great job of describing, in detail, Ego Psychology from a historical, theoretical, and practical perspective. I was particularly fond of Part II dealing with the ego and its functions and defenses. She writes with a clarity that is difficult to find when reading books dealing with detailed theoretical perspectives. I would highly recommend this book to socials workers and pyschologists alike. It is a wealth of information that you will find yourself referencing again and again.

About the Author

Jeanne Liedtka is a professor at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Virginia. Formerly the executive director of its Batten Institute, a foundation established to develop thought leadership in the fields of entrepreneurship and corporate innovation, she has also served as chief learning officer for the United Technologies Corporation (UTC) and as associate dean of the MBA program at Darden.

Tim Ogilvie is CEO of Peer Insight, an innovation strategy consultancy, where he has pioneered contributions to the emerging disciplines of service innovation, customer experience design, and business model exploration. His clients include AARP, Bank of America, Diebold, GE, Hallmark, Hewlett-Packard, Procter & Gamble, Starwood Hotels, and The Hartford.

Not sure who the target audience is...

My expectations for this book were quite high -- I wanted the promised thinking tool kit for managers in a fun-to-read package as advertised in the book title.

I was a little disappointed. It is a good read, and the authors did a nice job of making the book visually compelling. I was disappointed in the depth of the content though. The authors presented what I felt was a very surface-level explanation of the design process. The primary "tool" was a phased approach to design that separated creativity from concept development from sales pitch: not exactly a revolutionary design strategy.

I am struggling a little bit with the question "who would I recommend the book to?" It is generally well-written, and the illustrative stories are also kind of interesting. In all fairness, some of the organizing outlines are also useful. However, it is too surface-level to be useful to an expert audience, and it won't really help novice designers grow in expertise.

This book could be useful as a group read. For example, I could imagine a professional design group reading this book together (like a book discussion group) as a way to explore their own thoughts about the design process. For most everyone else, I would not recommend this volume.

Interesting but shortcoming introduction to service design (horrible Kindle lay out)

Good introduction to service design for business people, but definitely no hands-on manual. The structure is well done with a clear focus on the advantages of each service design method, with an emphasis on decreasing risk. This could have been an alternate title for this book: "Service design: how to decrease your business risks".

The examples are realistic, but a bit boring and often too short. I found the homework quite childish, but I guess it's done on purpose in order not to intimidate the novice reader.

A note on this kindle edition, it's done very badly. The secondary content is set up with a grey font on a grey background, and therefore almost unreadable! Furthermore, the pictures are of a much too low resolution, so zooming in doesn't reveal any more detail. This is really annoying, as this pictures represent diagrams with small text.

All in all, I would only recommend the paper version to persons completely new to service design and design thinking, mostly for the arguments why to use the different methods.

Tools to Find the Design Thinker in All of Us

There has been a veritable onslaught of strategy and business 'design' literature published in the past few years. Most of it is interesting but falls into one of two traps: either it's too theoretical to put into action, or it's directed to a choir of the design-familiar and leaves everyone else behind. Liedtka and Ogilvie break the mold with their new book, providing a framework and a tool kit to help almost anyone with interest and motivation explore the power of design thinking.

It starts with a relatively simple point. Most of the time, most of the world sees the design process as messy and unpredictable and nonlinear and twisted and terribly inefficient. In many organizations, that's why design is often considered a black box so impenetrable that it's outsourced to marketers, product developers, and, well, designers. Liedtka and Ogilvie take the mess and unbundle it all into a four-phase, 10-step framework that starts to look more like a process that individuals and organizations can learn and replicate.

While the steps are somewhat familiar, the recommended approaches in each phase sound reasonable but are more challenging for most people to put into practice. (Try explaining to a typical business planner that you're going to generate new business offerings based on research you conduct with a dozen or so customers, and you'll see what I mean.) Lucky for all of us, Designing for Growth provides concrete tools and step-by-step instructions and plenty of real-life examples for each step of the journey so that there's sufficient structure to help the reader navigate the discomfort of trying something new.

I've been fortunate enough to collaborate with Liedtka and she's fond of saying that she's not a designer, and that if she and her faculty colleagues can make good use of the Designing for Growth tools then anyone can. Having watched her in action, I'd say she's more of a designer than she'd like to admit, though perhaps not in a traditional sense. Because for me -- and as illustrated throughout Designing for Growth -- being a designer isn't about being artistic or clever or even all that creative. Being a designer is about approaching a complex problem with curiosity and empathy and patience and then having the discipline to explore many possible answers before selecting a path forward. This book helps bring out that design thinker in each of us.

How many friends can the "author" get to leave positive reviews in a shady attempt to justify the outrageous price point?

At the $17.99 price point I was expecting cardboard backed covers, nicely weighted paper, and images on only one side of the page and somewhere near 60-100 images, like what you find in most Art Therapy books. If there are substantially fewer images they would be on artist grade paper and artist level images, like what you find in the Pepin coloring books. The cover is flimsy and the paper is very light and thin with images on both sides making it impossible to use any medium that could potentially bleed through. There are 2 pictures of each image and as cool as that is I suspect it was done more as an attempt to justify the exorbated cost of this book. I did rate it 2 stars because the quality of the images is beautiful and they are iconic in nature but this coloring book is a total rip off at $17.99. The average Creative Haven coloring book is $5.99 and has a better quality cover, slightly heavier paper, and images on only one side of the page, and perforations for removing pages if you want to make copies or hang them up for display. Someone needs to reprice this book and I'm likely going to return my copy. Wouldn't be a half bad product if priced $5.99-$7.99.

Good enough for my need

I wanted a circuit for my son's project. I found it in this book. I didn't really need the rest of the circuits, well, at least for now. But it is worth it since that single circuit solved my problem.

I have bought most electronic circuits books from amazon. They all have one thing in common: you might need only a couple or so circuits from the whole collection. However, even a single solution can be worth the cost of the book.

Not a good buy for the dollars; should be a seriously discounted book as much is obsolete or cannot be built today.

The book is a bit of a fraud; I can see why they DO NOT let you look inside before you order. Some circuits are for use with 220 volts AC; not a standard in the US. Some circuits call for obsolete parts or parts that are hard to locate. Some of the circuits do not have a PC board layout, usually the very complex circuits where it would be most helpful. There are even RS232 etc. projects which are not at all useful and note for USB etc. that would be useful. And there is a lot of filler in the book. I am sorry that I wasted my twenty one bucks on this book. I will never buy another that I can't browse through first.

Good for those who know the basics of assembling electronic circuits but not for all

If you don't know how to etch a pcb board, nor drill a hole in a pcb, nor transfer a pcb pattern to the copper side of pcb, don't jump to buy this book. These basic skills are not discussed in this book. Go and buy other books that teach these skills.

If you know the basic skills though, you can buy this book. It can add to your collection of circuits.

Let me save you some time and money...according to the author the big secret to keep a man satisfied is that men like sex and lots of it. That's it. DUH! Nothing original here. It is mostly just the author plugging her other books, gossiping about people, (most of which she has never met) and repeating over and over that men like sex and you should give it to them. What a bore!

A Prayer Life Winner!

I wanted something to help me focus more on praise & worship. While this wasn't quite what I envisioned,it has been a great help. What I like most is the prayer 'starter' at the end of the lesson. The '.....' leads you into thinking about what was stated,how you feel & helps you determine where you are in your walk. While it doesn't come right out with answers for your growth,it rather guides you into introspection on God's leading
through prayer. One example was "O Lord, I need your defense in...." What are you facing? What situation do you need to take before God in prayer? What habits do you need to surrender? This book has really helped me to focus not just on worship & praise but on my total prayer life.
I highly recommend it.
