Exciting New Historical Novel

To enter into the pages of SARGON is to be transported to a near mythic land where the Gods rule mortals and Royalty overrules the will of the Gods. This is a big book, one of big characters, themes and deeds. It follows the adventures of Atur, a foundling apprentice palm gardener in the court of Ku-Bau the devious first female queen of Sumer in ancient Mesopotamia. He finds himself at the center of a time of historic upheaval and the political machinations of City States on the brink of war.

The author, Richard Sewell, has convincingly and with great attention to detail created an entire civilization and a compelling vision of the sweep of history as a dynasty trembles and new blood rises to power. This reader bought it all and found it to be a real page turner. The action set-pieces are themselves models of cinematic staging.

The political intrigue can get a little dense at times, especially toward the end as a climactic plot is uncovered but I found careful reading is amply rewarded.

All in all, and exciting adventure story, a meditation on political power with contemporary implications and a vividly imagined portrayal of an exotic land in a turbulent era.

PS: The cast of characters in the back is very helpful at the beginning as you try to sort out the different factions and their relationships but you will really need to find a map of ancient Mesopotamia to keep nearby as the scope of the action widens and multiple cities come into play.

It's More than OK to Learn to Be YOU!

Being a fan of Peter Shepherd's work as a psychologist and his openly hopeful site about personal transition and transformation ([...] - with his ezine, "Cultivate Life"), I found myself enthralled by the aid provided in this text. To shift one's perspective about just who this wonderful presence known as "you" might be, you couldn't find a better guide book. Brian Lobel creates performances about bodies and how they are watched, policed, poked, prodded, and loved by others. Brian has shown work in a range of contexts, from medical schools to galleries, cabarets to museums and has toured BALL worldwide. He received a 2008 Wellcome Trust Arts Award for Fun With Cancer Patients & a grant from the Jerwood Charitable Foundation for Carpe Minuta Prima in 2010. Brian is a Teaching Associate at Queen Mary, University of London, a Supported Artist at The Basement in Brighton and an Associate Artist for Clod Ensemble's Performing Medicine.

An Unintentional Comedy Classic!

This book is a classic in the same sense that "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is considered a classic film. Both are so mind boggling awful, only a true genius could have been responsible for them. Anna Margaret Ross, pen-name Amanda McKittrick Ros, self-published Irene Iddesleigh in 1897, with funds provided by her husband as a tenth wedding anniversary present. It is said that The Oxford literary group the Inklings, which included such luminaries as C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, would hold reading competitions to determine who could get the furthest through this book without laughing. If you want to hold your own book club "straight face" competition you might have difficulty getting paper copies of Irene Iddesleigh. It's long out of print, with prices ranging from $100 to $800 depending on the age and condition of the book. Isn't it great Amazon offers the Kindle edition now for free!

Here is an example of her wonderfully purple prose:

Historically, worth your time.

Mark Twain described it as "The most unintentionally humorous piece of literature ever written". This book is also mentioned in the documentary Bad Writing. It's worth the read in a historical aspect just so you can say you have read it but not in an enjoyment aspect.

If you teach English, this is a must read

Irene Iddesleigh is referred in one source as the worst novel ever. That may be, but her overuse of alliteration, sometimes silly description and general bad plot makes it an interesting read. Parts of it are classic in their badness. Teachers can use it to emphasize how students should and should not write. I'm glad I read it.
