How can a conversation fundamentally change the structure of the human psyche? Jonathan Lear’s new work is concerned with not simply a mere change of belief that emerges out of conversation, not even massive changes of belief. Nor is he concerned only with changes in emotional life. Rather, he is concerned with basic changes in the ways the psyche functions. How could any conversation have such a result? There are three areas of inquiry which have addressed this question: religion, philosophy and psychoanalysis. Within psychoanalysis the form this question takes is: what is the therapeutic action of psychoanalysis? That is, what is it about the peculiar nature of psychoanalytic conversation that facilitates fundamental psychic change?

This book argues that, properly understood, irony plays a crucial role in therapeutic action. However, this insight has been difficult to grasp because the concept of irony has itself been distorted, covered over. It is regularly confused with sarcasm; it is often mistakenly assumed that if one is speaking ironically, one must mean the opposite of what one says, that one must be feigning ignorance, that irony and earnestness cannot go together. All of these assumptions are false. So, part of the therapeutic action of this book is conceptual therapy: we need to recover a vibrant sense of irony.

This book, then, is not merely about the therapeutic action of psychoanalysis, it is an enactment of conceptual therapy. It is thus written as an invitation to clinicians –psychologists, psychoanalysts, psychiatrists – to renew their own engagement with the fundamental concepts of their practice. To that end, the book investigates the concepts of subjectivity and objectivity that are appropriate for psychoanalysts, the concept of internalization and of transference. There is also an extended discussion of the theories of Hans Loewald and Paul Gray – and how they do and do not fit together. The very idea that love, or Eros, could be a drive – as Freud postulated – is given a new interpretation.

Therapeutic Action will be of interest to anyone concerned with the central concepts of psychoanalysis. And, indeed, to anyone interested in how conversation can bring about fundamental psychic change.

First draft of a great book

Lear's book is a continuation of Freud's "metapsychology," offering new ways to conceptualize some of what happens in psychoanalysis. His starting point is one which would seem obvious but is in fact rare in psychoanalytic writings (something which he comments on), namely, to "psychoanalyze" certain trends in psychoanalytic writing, that is, to speculate on the hidden motives, avoidances, and self-deceptions these trends might be covering. In doing so, he offers some brilliant insights, especially about subjectivity vs. "objectivity" and about transference. But Lear's book is an "easy read" because the writing is loose and casual. I found the scene-setting and run-up to his intellectual climaxes both rushed and drawn-out, the way you come to inspired thoughts during an all-nighter just before deadline, and afterwards you wish you had had the time to organize your whole essay around them from the start. Lear addresses himself very explicitly to the community of psychoanalysts (which at moments can be offputting to the uninitiated), and while his style is a refreshing change from the professional, impersonal prose of most analytic monographs, he also seems to address his peers as though they were laypersons. Furthermore, most of the book is organized as a commentary on a very influential essay by Hans Loewald, but by the end Loewald has disappeared, replaced by Heidegger and Kierkegaard. (Furthermore, Lear lets us know that he had weekly conversations--not, apparently, an analysis--with Loewald for several years, but never shares anything from those conversations with the reader. Very exasperating, and not just for Loewald fans.) I know I've spent more time in this review on the style than the substance, but as Lear asserts more than once in his book, the how of what is said is often more important than the what. I'll leave it to Lear to put his style on the couch. I'm inclined to excuse him: he's a practising analyst as well as a philosophy professor; he can't very well take a six- or twelve-month sabatical at a humanities center to make this the book it could have been. And that's a pity.

Lear Takes On Postmodernism

In this typically witty and delightful essay, Lear opens his mind to ironies of the psychoanalytic process, and in doing so finds reason to be suspicious of postmodern narratives of "intersubjectivity." This is a sort of return to Freud, or to more sympathetic readings of Freud, than we are used to these days. But Lear's take is postmodern, even if the postmodernists bug him, and this easy-to-read book will inspire new thoughts about old ideas across ideological spectrums.

What a Mistake

I bought this book by accidentally pressing the wrong button on my Kindle. I was actually in Agra at the time and was very disappointed with it. Its not worth the $43 and feels like its just the authors academic study. I doubt its going to sell much.

Practical and Informative

I had to order this book for on my graduate courses. I have read many books on change management and this is definitely one of the better reads, particularly for IT change management. If your organization is struggling getting over the hurdle of change, Lientz leads you through diagnosing the issues and how to overcome them in order to achieve lasting success.

Best Management Book Ever

I have read a lot of management books over the years and this is by far the best. At $50+ it is worth every penny and more.
Far beyond just IT change management this book provides principles and methods for managing any project. It is very practical and thorough. It is not a RAH RAH book, but a great discussion of pitfalls and how to deal with them in a practical way. Page after page of really great methods on how to do things. It is more like a handbook than a text.
I could not recommend it more highly.

Solid path through a political minefield

Changing IT is akin to herding cats because as a whole there is a legacy mindset at one end of the spectrum, and lack of discipline at the other. This book provides a workable approach to changing the culture and effecting real change.
As in their other books the authors take a project-oriented approach to the goals and objectives. Where other books that attempt to address this subject are focused on solely human factors and considerations, this one does that, but gives a structured approach as well. The set milestones and wealth of associated checklists are what set this book apart from others, and are the means of systematically changing IT in an effective manner.
To be sure, human factors are taken into consideration - the authors show a keen understanding of, and give advice for dealing with, organizational dynamics, politics and resistance to change. This is an essential set of knowledge and skill factors without which change cannot be accomplished.
The keys to the approach given in this book, though, are in the chapters dealing with defining your goals and developing an overall strategy, then selecting the approach that is most suitable for your organization. The project-oriented aspects are covered in chapters dealing with characterizing "as-is" tasks, planning, and working towards the long-term objectives. The approach also includes a viable measurement strategy with which to ascertain results, and advice on how to build enthusiasm and support - instead of resistance - as the change initiative is being implemented. A key chapter is "Prevent Reversion and Fallback", which all too frequently happens in the real world. By recognizing this particular risk in change and addressing how to prevent it the authors provide sound advice to avoid a major pitfall.
Overall this is an excellent book by two authors who I hold in high regard. I also recommend reading "RoadMap: How to understand, diagnose, and fix your organization" (ISBN 0964163527) in conjunction with this book because it contains information that will help you select and develop an optimum overall strategy for an IT organization that is customer-focused and efficiently run.

Illustrator Leanne Shapton's debut reads like a graphic-novel-cum-children's-book: each spread includes one or more scratchy, b&w line drawings plus short, facing-page, poetryesque texts. Its content, though, leans much more toward Sex In the City than Shel Silverstein, exploring conflicting feelings aroused in women by their boyfriends' ex-lovers. It's narrated (and drawn) by a sharp but weary onlooker who is very intimate with all the principles, who seem to form a loose circle of friends. A picture depicting "one of the women Len used to know" shows a dour, hot, tight-sweater-wearing woman who is summed-up with deadpan wit: in one sentence, she's "an opinionated academic," in the next, it's revealed, with barely concealed jealousy, that "She wore braces and they looked fantastic." Shapton also captures a complex brew of nostalgia, lingering attachment, relief, rage and intoxication harbored by the men: they keep letters, hairclips, phone numbers—and are occasionally also honest with themselves. In a serial description of Margaret's adventures reading her boyfriend Scott's journals, which deatail his past relationships, "Scott described seeing Diane on the subway with another man, and feeling jealous, but sorry for the man." Diane looks very mean, and the book is pitch perfect from start to finish. (Nov.)

Leanne Shapton, an illustrator, author, and publisher based in New York City, is a cofounder of J&L Books. She has been the art director of the National Post's Avenue page and Saturday Night magazine, and from 2008 to 2009 was also the art director for the New York Times Op-Ed page. Shapton is the author of six books: Toronto; Was She Pretty?; Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry; Native Trees of Canada; Swimming Studies, which won the 2013 NBCC Award for Autobiography; and Sunday Night Movies. She most recently coauthored Women in Clothes along with Sheila Heti and Heidi Julavits.

Everybody wonders, it's just no one talks about it

Have you ever been out with the person you're seeing when you run into someone who they know, but seem not to want to introduce you to? When you ask later, they'll say, "Oh, that was just a friend." In your mind you'll conjure up all manner of sordid details about their past association because, obviously, it was an ex. The jealousy will be overwhelming even though your partner came home with you and seems to have completely forgotten about the encounter.

That's what this book is like.

Was She Pretty? deals with the insecurities all current boy/girlfriends feel about the ones who came before them. Even if the relationship is long gone, there's something about the fact that the person you're with has a past that was separate from you that's somehow intriguing, and most of us are more than a little curious about who came first.

The book is an illustrated story with short vignettes about couples, their exes, and the details that remain to plague the current flame. One woman has an emergency at her boyfriend's house and finds (to both her horror and delight) a half-empty box of tampons. There is the man who will never let his current girlfriend answer the phone in his apartment, and you can just tell she thinks it's because of the ex. These tales are all short, a few lines at the most, but tell a story in just a few sentences. They are further illustrated with the author's drawings to develop the point.

I recently read, and enjoyed, Audrey Niffenegger's illustrated novel The Adventuress. It's the closest thing I could liken to Was She Pretty?, though even that comparison is a stretch. Was She Pretty? is an interesting book and will take no time at all to read. If you've been that guy or girl, the distrustful or openly curious one who can't just let the past be the past (and I think we all have at some point or another), it's worth it to see someone put those feelings into words and then illustrate them so candidly.

Chain, chain, chain, chain of...?

Picked this up at the library on a whim when I spotted it nestled in the comic book section. It's a series of largely single page illustrations accompanied by short pieces of texts, usually a sentence or two and occasionally a full paragraph. The text and images are the links in the chain that connect us all together, the invisible ties we form in our relationships. Person A's current significant other once dated Person B who in turn dated Person C, and the impressions of those people linger either in carefully chosen, defining facts or objects they may have left behind. Shapton chooses either to draw those people or the pertinent objects in question, sometimes even a string of those items, flowing one to another. The drawing is a bit crude and unfinished looking, but there is a blunt swiftness to it that goes with the spartan nature of her prose. If you remember that song "88 Lines About 44 Women," WAS SHE PRETTY? is a bit like the literary equivalent of that, but instead of one man's celebration of his conquests, this is the anxiety and doubt he left in his wake. Though you'll read it in a blink, the effect is of having lived through all those break-ups, make-ups, and shake-ups, and you'll feel like you have to catch your breath.

Intriguing back ex-stories thrust to the fore

The simplistic art will no doubt throw most people off. The art is not the sell here. It is the collection of brief, mostly one-line descriptions given the author by real people about former relationships. Taken in context, the book is an engaging - albeit quick - read. You wonder about what the exes of someone you've met might be like. This book takes that wonder a step further and treats the reader to a buffet of possibilities.

Probably too short for many, but a nice jaunt through a prickly subject.
