A very powerful play addressing the South African situation.
By Holly A. Lenz
In My Chindren! My Africa!, Fugard tells the story of a white South African girl who becomes involved in debates with a black South African boy and his teacher, but as the racial tension increases, tragedy becomes inevetable. Fugard tells a powerful story which not only addresses the racially charged South Africa he is from, but race relations and the need to realize the differences between people of race are only skin deep.

It made me cry!
By Lisa Gansky
My Children! My Africa! was the first book I've read ever to make me cry--so much towards the end that I had to put it down. It is the touching tale of a white South African girl who befriends a black South African boy and his teacher, amidst a time of strong racial tension. Their teacher helps them to learn that even though others may be at war, they still have the chance to pave the road to a new, better Africa. Fugard's best play ever!

Powerful, but flawed, play
By Daniel Schmidt
"My Children! My Africa!" is a flawed, yet powerful play first performed in 1989 in South Africa. Fugard is a talented playwright, but his assumptions are somewhat off.

The text centers around three characters set in "State of Emergency" 1984 South Africa. Isabel, a white, precocious Afrikaner; Thami, a black, independent African; and Mr. M, the teacher, caught in the middle of events not so out of their control. The story is somewhat about reconciliation and the power of education and discipline. Yet, things fall apart as Thami rebels in his mind against the Bantu education and the Western teachings (taught to him by his teacher Mr. M). In the end, all three pay the price for their friendship, but that is not the most of it.

In all honesty, the play taken with a grain of salt is moving and I felt my chest tighten and my heart race as Fugard effortlessly moves the reader through this trying time. But upon reflection, problems begin to emerge.

One is the assumptions are raised. Fugard is obviously anti-apartheid, but does the future of South Africa, as he was predicting in 1989, lay with those like Thami or those like Isabel. Thami, who begins to be swept away by the movements in Southern Africa (notably Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique) is given a negative aura by Fugard, as if he lets his emotions rule his better reasoning, exemplified by Mr. M. As one critic points out, Fugard, in the end, voices the beliefs of the white, middle class South Africa through characters like Isabel and Mr. M. The violence, which is "inevitably" what Thami will adopt, will only hurt South Africa's future after apartheid even more.

The other is the historical inaccuracies. The book was written in 1989, but set in 1984. Fugard uses the play as a weather-vane and a crystal ball in which he attempts to predict the future by rewriting the past. He misrepresents 1980s South Africa and movements like the UDF, essential to the ending of racial hierarchy in 1994, by having Thami break off Isabel and his friendship because blacks and whites were not allowed to mix and be friends. Fugard also uses history, on which Thami builds his new found historical consciousness, to downplay the positive roles of social movements in South Africa. Then there is the story of Mr. M, which Fugard rips right from the newspapers (he even keeps his same name) yet is not given proper justice.

The reason the play got 4 stars instead of 3 resides in Fugard's character, Thami. In my opinion, Thami transcends the near stranglehold that Fugard attempts to impose upon him. The events Fugard banked on us forgetting: Klipstown in 1955, Sharpsville in 1960, or Soweto in 1976. Don't follow Mr. M's bogus mantra of "correctly" reading or voting or seeing things - because more often than not, you're being misled in ways that cannot be seen. Instead, read with an open mind and let history guide you the rest of the way.

An Islamic Philosophy of Virtuous Religions: Introducing Alfarabi, by Joshua Parens

Joshua Parens provides an introduction to the thought of Alfarabi, a tenth-century Muslim political philosopher whose writings are particularly relevant today. Parens focuses on Alfarabi s Attainment of Happiness, in which he envisions the kind of government and religion needed to fulfill Islam s ambition of universal acceptance. Parens argues that Alfarabi seeks to temper the hopes of Muslims and other believers that one homogeneous religion might befit the entire world and counsels acceptance of the possibility of a multiplicity of virtuous religions. Much of Alfarabi s approach is built upon Plato s Republic, which Parens also examines in order to provide the necessary background for a proper understanding of Alfarabi s thought."

From the Back Cover
Joshua Parens provides an introduction to the thought of Alfarabi, a tenth-century Muslim political philosopher whose writings are particularly relevant today. Parens focuses on Alfarabi’s Attainment of Happiness, in which he envisions the kind of government and religion needed to fulfill Islam’s ambition of universal acceptance. Parens argues that Alfarabi seeks to temper the hopes of Muslims and other believers that one homogeneous religion might befit the entire world and counsels acceptance of the possibility of a multiplicity of virtuous religions. Much of Alfarabi’s approach is built upon Plato’s Republic, which Parens also examines in order to provide the necessary background for a proper understanding of Alfarabi’s thought.

"Timely and essential to the understanding of Islam, this book explores a classical Islamic writer’s reflections on the leading topic in Islamic and Western politics today: In what way should Muslims think about, and to what extent should they promote, the expansion of Islamic religion throughout the world? The book is practical in nature and addresses specific topics in Middle Eastern politics with resources from Alfarabi that have been available for one thousand years, yet have been ignored all too often. What is so important is that Alfarabi shows, from within Islam, what Muslims need to consider regarding science, philosophy, politics, and other religions. Islam does not need to turn to European or North American writers to find its own greatest strengths—Alfarabi is one of their own." — Terence J. Kleven, Central College

"Parens offers an illuminating interpretation of Plato’s Republic, which is the model for Alfarabi’s political philosophy, and, in so doing, breaks new ground in Plato interpretation." — David Burrell, author of Faith and Freedom: An Interfaith Perspective

About the Author
Joshua Parens is Professor of Philosophy and Dean of the Braniff Graduate School at the University of Dallas and author of Metaphysics as Rhetoric: Alfarabi'’s Summary of Plato’s "Laws," also published by SUNY Press.

Al Farabi: A Reintroduction for Our Times
By George Greene
This review serves as a correction to the one star review.

In An Islamic Philosophy of Virtuous Religions, Joshua Parens seeks to introduce the political philosophy of Al Farabi, a tenth century Islamic philosopher, to the twenty-first century in which revolutionary Iran and Islamofascist movements aspire to a universal caliphate through jihad. As a Muslim, Al Farabi, who lived in a time of similar aspiration, wrote between the lines in an attempt to moderate these aspirations and promote religious tolerance. It is this type of writing which may assist an internal Islamic Reformation today. Joshua Paren's book is a book for both Muslims and non-Muslims today who struggle with these theological-political problems.

In this regard, this book's particular focus differs generally from the writings of Leo Strauss and Muhsin Mahdi on Al Farabi, the latter being Joshua Paren's teacher. Leo Strauss' writings are linked to his studies of Maimonides; whereas, Muhsin Mahdi's importance is that he broadened as well as deepened Strauss' insight/rediscovery through a critical recovery of Al Farabi's corpus and his scholarship culminating in his 2001 book Alfarabi and the Foundation of Islamic Political Philosophy which predates 9/11. Though Joshua Parens acknowledges his debt to his teacher in both in the Acknowledgements and throughout this book, it is not a derivative work but stands on its own.

The primary focus of Joshua Paren's study is The Attainment of Happiness, not the Principles of the Opinions of the Inhabitants of the Virtuous City as set forth in the one star review. (The Attainment of Happiness is the first part of Al Farabi's Philosophy of Plato and Aristotle.) Through Joshua Paren's close reading of The Attainment of Happiness accompanied with his deep familiarity of Al Farabi's other writings, he shows how Al Farabi seeks to moderate the ambitious through both (1) a cautionary tale and (2) a showing of the limits of reason. In a sense, it is Al Farabi's reenactment of Plato's Republic where Glaucon is replaced by "the talented and dashing young men the city is most likely to take advantage of and corrupt".

Although Joshua Parens considers his work by its title an introduction to Al Farabi, it is neither simple nor easy. One of its great strength is through his close reading of texts wherein he shows one how to read Plato and Aristotle, how Al Farabi read Plato and Aristotle and how we should read Al Farabi. It is no small task. While reading this book, one needs at one's elbow minimally Muhsin Mahdi's translation of Alfarabi: The Political Writings, The Philosophy of Plato and Aristotle in order to follow the argument. Joshua Parens considers this work as a felicitous translation though it is clear that he is familiar with Arabic since at crucial points he differs with his teacher's translation.

Joshua Parens is a much needed guide through Al Farabi's writings especially in our times when reason is under attack and all forms of unreason are on the rise.

The subject (Alfarabi's Platonic critique of Islamic doctrine) is interesting, but the book itself is misleadingly presented and unoriginal. An introduction to Farabi this is most certainly not. If you read it without much familiarity with his work, you'll be hopelessly confused. Parens is an indirect writer who focuses on only one of Farabi's works (The Attainment of Happiness) and jumps right into the argument without orienting the reader effectively to the relevant text. Deceptive marketing aside, this book is really just a monograph trying to bolster the esoteric interpretation of Plato and Farabi pioneered by Leo Strauss, whose own work on Farabi (see, as a starting point, "Farabi's Plato") you can find for free online. I advise you do so, rather than spending $15 on this.

Here are the major parts of Parens' argument. First, he argues that Plato's Republic is a cautionary tale rather than a prescription. This is a compelling argument, but it's not original at all. Second, Parens argues that Farabi was deeply versed in the Republic, and saw his own work on ideal states as basically extending Plato's own goals to the Islamic context (this was Strauss' original insight). Third, he picks two areas where he thinks Farabi is particularly critical of contemporary Islamic doctrine (jihad as offensive war and the limits of human knowledge), and parses them in exhaustive detail. This is the only part of his work that's original, and it can be summed up as follows: those things that Strauss says Farabi does? He does them in these sections.

Finally, he argues that Farabi envisioned a multiplicity of virtuous religions, each developing from a particular cultural context, and that Islam--like the belief system Plato proposes in the Republic--isn't well suited to governing a heterogeneous state. Thus, like Plato's city in the Republic, Farabi's virtuous Islamic realm is intended to be neither possible nor desirable. This is also piggybacking on Strauss.

There you have it all. Parens doesn't seem to read Arabic or add any particular expertise in Islamic philosophy (he relies almost entirely on Muhsin Mahdi's interpretive work, himself a disciple of Strauss) to build off the foundation Strauss established. To anyone familiar with Strauss and Mahdi, the result reads like a first-year graduate student's work, with Parens merely serving as a compiler for arguments other people have already made in much more elegant prose. It's about as close as you can come to plagiarism without actually crossing that line. While I think the ideas in question are very serious and probably right, Strauss and Mahdi do a better job of expounding them, and are far more accessible to those unfamiliar with Farabi.

Starred Review. The first six pages of this wrenchingly honest memoir of Hood's daughter's death and its aftermath read like a tightly controlled scream. All the platitudes, the dozens of words of comfort that people offer—time heals, she is in a better place—are interspersed with Hood's silent, furious responses to these lies, with special scorn for those who say, Are you writing this down? The death of her five-year-old Grace in 2002 was completely unexpected: an ordinary strep throat somehow ravaged the organs of her small body. Hood (The Knitting Circle) takes readers through the slow, jagged steps of dealing with grief. Unable to write, she first took refuge in endless knitting, then got a tattoo on Grace's sixth birthday. Hiding from the Beatles' songs her daughter had loved, she found them so ubiquitous that she could finally listen only to talk radio. Grace's little shoes stood sentinel at the top of the stairs and three years passed before Hood could bear to clean her room. But there is redemption at the end of this short, anguished book. Hood and her husband have a new daughter, Annabelle, adopted from China, and at last, Hood can celebrate Mother's Day, albeit with a strange mixture of grief and joy. (May)

From Booklist
How does one recover from the plenary grief of losing a precious five-year-old child? Novelist Hood’s answer is simple: one doesn’t. After her daughter died suddenly from an antibiotics-resistant strep infection, she just moved along with life, at first muddling through days and weeks of hearing but not comprehending the advice of well-meaning friends and family. Next, the grief began to shift from being her primary focus to second place, then into periodic episodes of overwhelming anguish. Hood’s sometimes-too-painful-to-read memoir bares all the raw emotions, from denial to despair to anger, that she experienced. The grief never really leaves, she says; it just stops eclipsing all else. Especially after she took up knitting, a pastime that occupied her mind in such a way that she couldn’t knit and grieve at the same time. Ultimately, she, her husband, and their son moved on and, it seems, finally found their way to a likeness of the happiness they once had. --Donna Chavez

Review
“Comfort is novelist Ann Hood’s utterly harrowing, completely spellbinding memoir of losing her five-year-old daughter, Grace, to a rare form of strep in 2002. . . . [A] spare, gorgeously serpentine narrative. . . . Unforgettable.” (Elle)

“Comfort enriches our lives. . . . I will most likely never eat pasta with butter and Parmesan or cucumbers cut in perfect rounds . . . without thinking of Ann Hood and her daughter. And I have never met either one.” (Los Angeles Times)

“In graceful prose, Comfort bears witness to the heartbreaking particularity of her―of any―loss.” (People)

“Hood is larger than life, living, loving, and grieving on an operatic scale.” (New York Times Book Review)

A tear-stained hour with 'Comfort' will keep any parent straight for months.
By Jesse Kornbluth
"Comfort" is a very great book.

I don't think most people would read it if I paid them.

Consider: In April of 2002, Ann Hood's 5-year-old daughter spiked a fever. Rushed to the hospital, Grace was diagnosed with the kind of strep that ravages internal organs. In less than 48 hours, this sparkling, smart, cute, funny, loving girl --- a kid who embodied the entire glossary of childhood wonderfulness --- was dead.

You often hear: "There's nothing worse than burying a child."

Reading about it when the author is a master isn't much better.

Hood sugarcoats nothing. The book --- a love letter to a child forever missing --- starts with a chapter of all the things people tell grieving parents. Time heals. Give away her clothes, clean out her room. Take this drug. Have you read this? You look better.

And, because Hood had published some novels: Are you writing this down?

She does. Here. Finally. And, at the start, literally: Only the lies people tell me. There are no words for the size of this grief.

And the greatest of these lies? Time heals.

But Ann Hood doesn't heal. That's the plot of this 180-page memoir. Oh, she bought a journal, but she couldn't write, couldn't read, couldn't focus, couldn't cook, couldn't couldn't couldn't. If she didn't have a husband and a son, she might have drowned in a pool of tears.

And then there is the problem of time. Grace was so alive, she died so fast, where did she go? In memory, more real than the present, she's right here. But to step into her room, to drive past her school, to hear one of her favorite songs by The Beatles --- here come those tears again.

Someone pushes Hood to take up knitting. Well, why not? She fills a small room with yarn. And then: "I picked up my knitting needles. I cast on, counting my stitches. Then I swam, Gracie. I tried to swim to the other side of grief."

Does she make it? Well, she cooks pasta --- the shells that Gracie had loved --- and "the food did bring us comfort." There are desperate, hot, clinging nights with her husband. There is --- no surprise --- a frantic effort to get an explanation from a god who seems heartbreakingly silent. There's the graveside scene that is mercifully just a paragraph. And, though she doesn't say it here, she writes a novel, "The Knitting Circle", about a woman whose only child dies.

And then....but I don't want to spoil the ending. [If you must know, a Very Good Thing happens.] Everything changes. And then, some days, it's back to square one. "Grief doesn't have a plot," Hood writes. "It isn't smooth. There is no beginning and middle and end."

This is not an easy book to get through, and when you have, as we do, a 6-year-old girl in the next room, it's even worse. But I'm damn glad I read "Comfort". It's real and unadorned --- Ann Hood puts you in the room. This is great writing precisely because this isn't Writing, just a record of constant horror, occasional relief, and the power of time.

But enduring a book like this just for the writing --- that's for the hard-core reader. A more likely reason is that you're grieving, and you want to compare notes. Or that you're a parent, and this is your worst fear, and you can't resist finding out how grim it might be to lose a child.

As it happened, I read this book a day after our kid revealed that she was not quite the perfect goddess we had led ourselves to believe. I suspect there are a lot of parents who experience that daily. They're not disappointed with their kids, not really; they're just frazzled, beat up in their own lives, with no way to talk back to the perpetrators. And so they snap. Or get loud. Or tune out. Well, "Comfort" reminded me that we were blessed our daughter showed up here at all.

I would bet that a tear-stained hour with "Comfort" will keep any parent straight for months.

A Loving Portrait of Unspeakable Grief
By Morgan Callan Rogers
The courage it took for author Ann Hood to put into words a wordless grief merits more than five stars. But the fact that Ms. Hood has accomplished this with complete honesty and unalterable love, using the skilled craft she has so beautifully mastered makes this little book a giant. To lose a child is the worst sorrow a parent can know, particularly when that loss is sudden. What the author does is guide the reader through her process - from the numbing shock and its devastating aftermath, how it affects her as a mother, what it means to her family, to her sense of spirituality, to her marriage, to her every day life as she knew it then and knows it now, and the reaction from friends and complete strangers. This book is a tribute to a special little girl who loved the Beatles, cucumber slices, art, and dancing. It serves as a gift to those who might have staggered under the unbearable and lonely journey through intense sorrow. Hood's honesty with her reader keeps this book on track. She offers no solutions, but she does offer hope. And she offers her readers comfort in the passage of time, in the love and support of family and friends, and a way to move forward into a different framework that contains light and love, while holding on to the memory of someone beloved. This is an incredible book. I wish Ann Hood and her family all of the best and I thank her for the heart it took to weave this book together.

The First Wedding

NOW, THIS WAS A HAPPY ENDING.

It was all Nora had hoped for, all she had prayed for, and she couldn't stop grinning as the music began—Jeremiah Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary.

She smiled even wider when two elderly gentlemen in traditional servant's livery opened the great oak double doors with a flourish befitting the exalted occasion.

After one deep breath, Nora stepped through the open doors and did the one thing she'd sworn she would never do—she walked down the aisle of a church in a wedding dress toward Soren, who waited for her at the altar.

He hadn't seen her for hours and this moment was Soren's first look at her in her wedding dress. It had been twenty years since she'd walked down an aisle toward Soren as a bridesmaid in a wedding he'd performed. Even now, halfway down the aisle, she could see the look in his eyes, a look that said the twenty years had been worth the wait.

As Nora took her place at Soren's right hand, she leaned in close and whispered, "Stop looking at me like that."

"Why?" he asked as the two hundred assembled guests rose to their feet when the groom made his entrance into the Great Hall that had been converted into a church for the wedding.

"You're on duty," she reminded him. "Father Stearns."

"Can I look at you like that after the wedding?"

She smiled at him as the two grooms joined hands in front of Soren.

"Today you can do anything you want."

"Watch out. I'll hold you to that promise," he said as the music faded into silence leaving her unable to retort. She swallowed her words, composed her face and tried not to cry when Soren began to speak.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join this man, Michael Luka Dimir, and this man, Griffin Randolfe Fiske, in holy matrimony. May your love be blessed by the sacrament of marriage and may we all who are gathered as witnesses rejoice together in the beauty of your commitment to each other as we would bask in the warmth of the sun…"

Nora made it three whole minutes into the ceremony before the tears started flowing. Luckily all eyes were on Michael and Griffin as they spoke their vows and made their promises. Once upon a time in a very different setting, Nora and Soren had made promises to each other and she wore those promises around her neck in the form of wedding bands engraved with two words—Forever and Everything. They weren't wedding vows but they had bound them together nonetheless. What was a sacrament but the outward sign of inner grace? If she and Soren loving each other and staying together despite all they'd been through, all they'd put each other through for twenty-three years, wasn't a miracle, she didn't know what was.

"Therefore," Soren said as the service drew to its conclusion, "now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder."

Soren spoke with authority and power, as if the words themselves could bind hearts together.

"I now pronounce you husband…and husband."

Griffin took Michael's face in his hands and kissed him.

And kissed him.

And kissed him.

A kiss of love and of lust and of complete and utter devotion, it went on so long the assembled witnesses started to titter, then giggle, then laugh. They kissed until Soren cleared his throat not once, but twice, louder the second time than the first. When even that didn't put a stop to their rather protracted display of public affection, Soren uttered a low "For heaven's sake, Griffin, people have places to be. Can't you save the consummation until later?"

Griffin paused long enough to look at Soren and answer, "Nope," before returning to the kiss with gusto.

Nora applauded him. Good man. Don't let anyone tell you to stop kissing for such a silly reason as two hundred people watching. What better place in the world was there to be than here, watching true lovers kiss? One didn't see such a thing every day. When witnessing a miracle, one should never hurry it along, for it'll be gone all too soon and who knows when one will see another miracle in one's lifetime?

Time stopped with that kiss. The image imprinted itself upon Nora's mind like a tintype photograph… She stood at Soren's right as Michael's mistress of honor—no one would have believed her a maid or a matron, so mistress it was—and Kingsley stood to the left of Soren as Griffin's best man. The wedding was held in the Great Hall of the thousand-year-old castle. The vibrant blue walls gleamed like polished azurite in the glow of a dozen brass-and-crystal chandeliers. Candles and flowers stationed on the ebony oak floors encircled the wedding party. Kingsley, Griffin and Soren all wore kilts. Griffin's and Kingsley's were red, white and green, the tartan of his mother's ancestors. Soren's kilt was black and blue, the traditional clergy tartan of Scotland and bruises. Upon request and because she couldn't tell Griffin no when he'd asked so nicely, she'd worn a Scottish wedding dress, tiered white silk and lace peeking out from under a corseted red-and-green tartan overlay. Michael had forgone the kilt—not his style, he said—and chosen a hip Rat Packera tuxedo with a black shirt and black jacket. A better-looking married couple she'd never seen in her life and not because they were so beautiful, although they were, but because their love was true and pure and hard-won. Every act of love was an act of courage, but for Michael and Griffin it was especially so. The world didn't often reward those who loved outside the lines. Nora had learned this lesson the hard way.

The kiss went on so long the guests rose to their feet and applauded.

Griffin turned to the masses and issued an order.

"Less applauding," he yelled at his guests. "More kissing!"

"No one has to tell me twice," Kingsley said, holding out his hand to Juliette, the mother of his daughter with another one on the way, and the most beautiful woman in attendance by far. Laughing, Juliette rose to her feet and put her hand in Kingsley's. He dipped her back and gave her an old Hollywood kiss.

"Shall we?" Soren asked.

"In front of two hundred people?"

"Why not?"

"Is that a rhetorical question or do you really want me to list all eight hundred reasons why not?"

Soren answered by taking her face in his hands and kissing her—a kiss like Communion, like wine on her tongue. She heard a few gasps of shock from the assembly followed by laughter and applause. Apparently this was the first time they'd seen a Catholic priest kissing a woman. It was a first for Nora as well, being kissed by Soren in front of so many people they didn't know. Yes, Kingsley had forced all the staff and the guests to sign non-disclosure agreements, but that was no guarantee word wouldn't leak that a certain well-respected Jesuit priest passionately kissed a fairly notorious dominatrix at a wedding in Scotland. And not just any wedding—a samesex wedding. Soren could be laicized for performing a samesex marriage. He'd get in less trouble if he were caught by the Pope himself sodomizing her in the Tomb of Saint Peter. Not that she'd ever had that fantasy—not very often anyway. Officiating the service had been Soren's gift to Michael, whom he loved like a son. When Nora had reminded him of the very real danger of excommunication if caught, Soren had replied, Michael asked me. It's my honor to do it. Since Soren was a man of honor that had been the end of it. But it wouldn't be the end of it.

Soren was a Jesuit priest who had kissed a woman in front of two hundred people and performed a same-sex wedding. A kiss plus a wedding plus what would happen tonight at nine o'clock added up to one very simple conclusion.

Soren's days as a priest were numbered.

Nora's Last Confession

NORA PULLED BACK FROM THE KISS AND SAW A DOZEN or more couples kissing, including Griffin and Michael, who were still kissing.

And. Still.

Kissing.

"Oh, for fuck's sake, Griffin," Nora said, reaching in front of Soren for Kingsley's hand. "You two make out as long as you want. The King and I are going to get a drink."

Nora gave Kingsley the end of the long plaid ribbon she'd tied around her bouquet. As they walked on either side of the happy couple—still kissing, of course—they lifted their hands and passed the sash over their heads like a wedding bower. Behind her she heard Soren speaking to the crowd of guests.

"I'd suggest everyone retreat to the banquet hall," he said in his most authoritarian clergy voice. "It seems the groom and groom might be a while."

Kingsley took her arm in his to escort her down the long aisle to the door.

"I heard we have you to thank for the wedding," Kingsley said, kissing the back of her hand.

Nora winced. "Michael had a little case of cold feet. I beat it out of him."

"Literally?"

"It took a solid hour of flogging followed by an hour of wax-play. Kid came so hard he almost passed out. Two-hour nap, and he was ready to get married. I love saving the day," she said. "I'm so good at it."

They waited in the foyer and soon they were joined by Michael's mother and sister, Griffin's parents and three brothers, and Soren. Juliette, wearing a red gown to match Kingsley's kilt, passed Céleste into his arms. And when Michael and Griffin finally emerged from the Great Hall it was to a hail of applause and a shower of rice. Céleste was the best rice thrower of them all, Kingsley assured his little girl. Michael's lips appeared swollen from so much passionate kissing and his pale cheeks were flushed, but Nora had to admit, she'd never seen him or Griffin ever look happier. Today was a beautiful day to be in love.

The guests who greeted the couple with hugs and kisses were a hodgepodge of friends and family, or as Kingsley called them, "the freaks and the straights." Mistress Irina, the first dominatrix Kingsley had trained for The 8th Circle, had sat next to Michael's aunt and uncle during the ceremony. Michael's sister Erin had borrowed a tissue from Alfred, Griffin's white-haired butler, who'd had to surreptitiously wipe his own eyes a time or two during the ceremony. Nora'd been a little surprised he'd come all the way to Scotland for Griffin's wedding. When she had asked him why he'd made the long trip from upstate New York, he'd answered, "He's a manchild and a deviant, and he has more money than sense, young lady. So of course I'm here for his wedding to his shamefully younger boy toy. It's the only sensible thing he's ever done in his life." Then he'd stalked off before Nora could hug him or worse, cry in his arms, which would have been an unforgivable affront to his dignity.

"Good ceremony, Father," she said, smiling up at Soren. "I loved the homily."

"Thank you. The Lord gives me good material to work with. I suppose He deserves most of the credit." Leave it to a Jesuit to be simultaneously pious and smug.

"Oops, picture time," she said. "I should go."

The photographer was already attempting to corral the wedding party back into the Great Hall. Soren started back into the hall with her.

"You can't be in the pictures," she reminded him.

"Michael expects me to be in at least one of the photographs for him and Griffin."

"Soren…this is not a good idea."

"Michael's like a son to me," he said. "When you have a child, you make sacrifices for them."

"All right. Pictures it is. In for a penny, in for a pounding, right?" She took his hand in hers. His fingers trembled, and she met his eyes with a question.

"I'm fine," he said before she had the chance to ask.

"It's fine if you aren't fine."

"I am fine."

"Your hand is shaking."

"This kilt is.…breezy."

"It's like a hundred feet of wool."

"This castle has an updraft. I'm not used to inclement weather in that region."

"It's your own fault for going regimental."

"Kingsley was. And when in Rome."

"How do you know Kingsley's going full Scotsman?" She narrowed her eyes at him. "Did you actually go running this morning or did you two play a game of hide the claymore?"

"I ran," he said. "Before."

"I knew it." She took both of his hands in hers now and interlocked their fingers.

Soren glanced at a grandfather clock and back at her. "Five thirty," he said. "Three and a half more hours."

"It'll go fast," she said, smiling a hopeful smile. "Won't it?"

"It will be the longest three and a half hours of my life." For Nora, too.

"They won't need me at the reception which isn't a reception. I can wait with you," she said.

"Thank you." He kissed her on the forehead. "What would I ever do without my Little One?"

Nora swallowed an unexpected lump in her throat.

"I promise, you won't ever have to find out."

Reluctantly she let go of Soren's hands as the photographer led her and Kingsley toward Michael and Griffin. The first pictures were of the groom and groom, best man and mistress of honor.

Kingsley held out his arm for her and she took it, grateful for his company in the secret they shared. "How is he?" Kingsley asked. "He is exactly how you think he is," she said. "Never so scared in his life?"

"White-knuckle petrified."

Kingsley kissed her cheek. "I know how he feels."

Pictures took half an hour. Kingsley promised to make her and Soren's excuses to anyone who asked where they were. Michael and Griffin could be told the truth, of course. They would understand. Michael had agreed to a big wedding with one stipulation—no official wedding reception. A party? Sure. Fine. Michael, young artist that he was, found manufactured moments like the ceremonial cake-cutting offensive. The reception was only for people to eat and drink and dance. Once the wedding was over, the wedding party was free to get up to whatever depraved shenanigans they wanted to. And as she and Kingsley were the wedding party, depraved shenanigans were a given.

Nora went looking for Soren and wasn't the least surprised to find him in the castle's small stone-and-wood chapel. She stepped inside and strode toward him.

The sun streamed through an octagonal window and cast eight-sided light onto Soren, turning his blond hair into gold in a moment of pure alchemy. In a breath, in an instant, she was fifteen years old again, and he twenty-nine, and he looked exactly like he did the first time she'd laid eyes on him. The sunlight melted the years between then and now. Her hand trembled so it was a miracle she didn't drop her glass of red wine.

Her footsteps on the stone floor alerted Soren to her presence. He lifted his head and turned back to her. The mask of composure had fallen, and she saw anguish in his eyes. She set her glass of wine on the altar and went to him, gathering him in her arms, holding him to her heart and resting her chin on the top of his head.

"How are you, my sir?"

"I don't know," he admitted, looking up at her. "There have been days in my life where I've woken up not knowing that later on that very day, my entire life would change. The day I met Kingsley, the day I met you. Usually you don't know the day or the hour. Today I do."

"Remember that story I wrote about Queen Esther when I was in high school?"

This is by far one of my favorite series of all time and I am so sad ...
By Book Lover
This is by far one of my favorite series of all time and I am so sad to see it end, but I think Reisz wrapped up this series perfectly. Throughout The White Years Reisz has taken us on a journey of the past, so that we can understand how our “nonnegotiables” became who they are.

We have watched Eleanor in all the facets and time periods in her life and The Queen focuses on her becoming a known as The Queen of The Eighth Circle, her time as a dominatrix. The story picks up with Nora returning to Kingsley after her time at the Convent. She is still not speaking to Søren, something both King and her have in common. King begins training her and brings in an expert: Søren.

Let me tell you my heart stopped when Nora saw Søren again. If you follow the series, it isn’t a spoiler to know they do not immediately rekindle. However, I absolutely loved seeing the love, sacrifice and devotion these two have for each other. It was never more evident than in The Queen.

Søren and Nora have never been your typical couple, but it works for them. When I was first introduced to them I was at a lost for just how unique this story line is and their connection, but now I can’t imagine a different world for them. Regardless, I love seeing these special moments were you just know their love is more, it’s not easy, it’s more than sexual, it’s real, unwavering love!

I think Reisz is one of the most talented writers and so freaking intelligent. I love the symbolism and how all her words have meaning and substance. So of course in perfect fashion, The Queen brings us all the way back to the beginning with Nora meeting Wes. When it was all over, I tiered up and then wanted to immediately jump right back into the beginning with The Siren.

If you have not read this series I cannot recommend it enough. Yes, it’s not your typical love story, so it’s not for everyone and I get that. However, if you love stories about real, unconditional love, with lots of sexiness and BDSM this is for you. This series is original, sexy, humorous and full of heart. I know I am probably over emotional, but even as I write this review I want to cry. I never want to say goodbye to Søren, Kingsley and Nora they are some of my favorite characters ever written!

A series end that exceeded my hopes and expectations!
By Robin Segnitz
Back in August of 2012, I bought a novel titled The Siren. Although I had never heard of author Tiffany Reisz, I was definitely intrigued by the book synopsis. What I remember most from reading The Siren is that I was stunned by the crisp writing, creativity and uniqueness of the plot. The Siren won an award that year: Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award (RT Award) for Best Erotic Romance of 2012 – I just knew The Siren was a 5-star novel, and I couldn’t wait for the next novel in the series!

Nora Sutherlin. Father Marcus Stearns. Kingsley Edge. For those of us who have followed along their journey, we’ve learned how this unlikely trio came to know each other. We’ve witnessed the unique love these characters share for one another. We know the disagreements that have driven them apart, seen them deal with family and questionable relationships. Beginning with The Siren, the overall arc of The Original Sinners series spans across a series of eight novels which is split into two quartets: the Red Years and the White Years. Tiffany Reisz brings her characters full circle as she concludes her series with The Queen, where Nora makes one final confession to her Priest – Soren.

With Nora’s final confession, The Queen transitions from a castle in Scotland to the past, where Eleanor finds herself at the front door of Kingsley’s townhouse. She is homeless and jobless, without a penny to her name, and still bitterly angry with Soren. She’s not even certain if Kingsley will take her in, but instead, he surprises Elle with a job offer. He wants Elle to be the next great Dominatrix of the Eighth Circle. Kingsley convinces Elle to take up the whip, the flogger, embrace her dominant side and make loads of money. He dubs her Mistress Nora Sutherlin and issues a challenge: become the Red Queen of the Underground.

Nora embraces Kingsley’s challenge, continues to move forward in her writing career, and through it all, her feelings for Soren continue to swirl with confusion. Underneath all of the bitterness and anger, she still feels undying love for her Priest. While part of The Queen is about Nora’s transition to a career as a Dominatrix, the other half of the story is about Eleanor and Soren. The Queen really does come down to a set of vows made by Soren and Eleanor when she was just fifteen-years-old: if Eleanor would promise him forever, Soren would promise her everything. And Soren has no intention of breaking his vow.

I have faithfully followed The Original Sinners series to its conclusion. When you find a great new series to read, you embrace it, count down the days until each book releases and hope it remains strong to the end. You dream of a conclusion that exceeds your expectations. Well….Tiffany Reisz did not disappoint. The Queen included a cast of all of my favorite characters from across the series. The suspense held me glued to the pages as I pushed toward the climax. I can tell everyone with absolute certainty that I could not have dreamed of a more perfect ending for Soren, Nora and Kingsley and the rest of The Original Sinners! Congratulations to author Tiffany Reisz – The Queen is a 5-star novel and has earned a place on my list of 2015 favorites!

Hail all to the Queen
By Brenda Reynolds
As usual I downloaded (through pre-sale the moment it became available) Tiffany's new book at the stroke of midnight EST the day of release and began reading. For last six books I have planned for the release, with the usual anticipation and finishing all other reading so that I can focus solely on the new release. Today was no exception. I'm a bit stalkerish with her work as I've read everything I could get my hands on that Tiffany Reisz (pronounced Rice) has written. Her fans have waited with desire and trepidation for the last installment of the White years. We desire this because it is more of our beloved story of Nora, Soren and King. We do not want this release because she has stated it was the last. Tiffany has captivated her audience with her innate ability to tell a story. Her written communication to her followers put us on our knees with anticipation and gratitude, Mistress of our Literary kink. We have fallen in love with every character, made them a part of my family and this, the last book...is as though our family is going their separate ways. This is a love story, from beginning to end, of two people that have brought in the unlovable and loved them, made them whole again. Bring the tissues, a box of them, because this is a sad and very happy ending. Tiffany has also stated she would give us short stories every once in a while so that we aren't going cold turkey. "The Queen" has thrown her flogger around my heart making the "Original Sinners" series one of my all time favorites. I will go back and re-read every issue including the stories exclusive to her website. If I could give this book, this series, ten stars I would because it has truly earned every single one.
