Entertaining and quick read

The Devil is a Part-Timer, Volume 3 was quite entertaining to read. I could barely put it down. While there weren't as many battles as the previous two novels, we got a pleasant amount of character development and backstory, which I have been wanting more of after reading the first two novels and watching the anime adaptation (which I recommend, it's hilarious). I honestly couldn't get enough of Alas Ramus and the characters' interactions with her. The latest installment to the Devil is a Part-Timer series was both funny and heartwarming. I recommend this novel to any fan (or potential fan) of this series.
Also, since I bought this at Barnes and Noble, I'll submit a photo of the cover to verify the purchase and to assure potential buyers that this is the light novel, not the manga adaptation.

By No Just No
This is the Volume you want to read if you finished watching the anime. It touches on how Maou became the Devil King and hints at what happened to Emilia's parents. Additionally, we get Alas Ramus who is an adorable character that bridges the relationship between Emilia and Maou further. Sadly, Chiho gets little spotlight here even after confessing her love to Maou in Volume 2. So if you were looking forward for that progression, expect it in the next few Volumes.

Fun Read!

This was a fun read. Since I had watched the anime first, I decided to start reading this volume. I have heard that the story is repetitive, but I think the plot here adds another interesting twist in the story. We hear more about Sadao's back story from before he became the Devil King, which I thought was really cool. This was the first light novel I read and I'm pretty satisfied. Since I already saw the anime, I decided to read Vol. 3 so I wouldn't be bored with the repetitiveness expressed by other reviewers and I wasn't. So I would suggest to people who have seen it, to start here.

Six Australian children are each emotional, in their various ways, to be going on a light aircraft trip to Coonabibba Station , in Western New South Wales. These children are:

Gerald and Carol, firm friends, and members of the 'in' group,
Colin and Mark, a quiet older brother and a rowdy younger brothers, and,
Bruce and Jan, fraternal twins, the brother burley and affable and the sister nervous and intuitive.

Coonabibba is Gerald's family's place and the children are invited there for his birthday party and to stay weekend. But little do the children know that something terrible is about to happen. This disaster will challenge all of them and deeply affect them as they rise to meet the challenge.

While there are numerous books in the 'survival' genre this one shines above the rest due to the author's excellent writing style. Southall manages to instill the text with stress and tension, sustaining it chapter after chapter. He achieves this effect by concentrating on the psychological affects of events on his characters, especially letting us hear their inner monologue as they struggle with their needs, wishes and inadequacies. In this way Southall manages to truly involve and move the reader. The first half of the book is in fact some of the best writing I have read for some time, even outshining many writers for adults. Another point in Southall's favor is that he manages to take his characters somewhere. The six children at the end of the book are very different from those we begin with. The reader comes to empathize with all the individual children as their fortunes rise and fall. won the Australian Children's Book of the Year Award for 1968 and that prize was truly deserved. While the book is now quite old it has not dated in any way as Southall has kept the text quite clean of cultural and historical references.

About the Author

Scott Appelrouth (PhD, New York University, 2000) is Professor of Sociology at California State University, Northridge. His interests include sociological theory, cultural sociology, and social movements. He has taught classical and contemporary theory at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and has published several articles in research- and teaching-oriented journals on social movements, theory, and the controversies over jazz during the 1920s and rap during the 1980s. His current research focuses on political discourse in American party platforms.

Laura Desfor Edles (PhD, University of California, Los Angeles, 1990) is Professor of Sociology at California State University, Northridge. She is the author of Symbol and Ritual in the New Spain: The Transition to Democracy after Franco (1998) and Cultural Sociology in Practice (2002), as well as various articles on culture, theory, race/ethnicity, and social movements.

I would have to agree with another person's review that they didn't have many feminist theorists like they should have

This was a book selected by my professor for a Sociology course during summer semester. I was excited to read this book but with summer courses being faster paced I found it a bit challenging to grasp some of the material. What material I did grasp was truly interesting. I would have to agree with another person's review that they didn't have many feminist theorists like they should have. Regardless it was a very interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone who is truly interested in the Sociology field.

I dislike it very much and would not buy it if ...

This is a very hard to understand and follow along with text. Typically text books are not something that we can choose whether or not we want to read. Some times I think its worth buying a text book rather than renting it as I may want to reference it later. This is not the case with this book. I dislike it very much and would not buy it if I had the chance.
