About the Author
After receiving an MD from University of Athens, he came to the Arthritis Branch in 1979 where he trained in immunology and rheumatology. Between 1987 and 2007 he was a member of the Uniformed Services/Walter Reed community where served in various positions including Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine and Chief of the Department of Cell Injury. In 2007 he joined the Beth Israel Medical Center as Chief of Rheumatology and Harvard Medical School as Professor of Medicine. He has served various leadership positions including President of the Clinical Immunology Society. He has served as chair of the Hypersensitivity, Autoimmunity, and Immune Mediated Diseases Study Section of the National Institutes of Health, Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Immunology, the official journal of FOCIS, and editor of Autoimmunity and Discovery Medicine, PLoS One and other journals. He has been elected to the Association of American Physicians, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP). He is the 2012 Lee C. Howley Jr. Arthritis Research Prize from the Arthritis Foundation and a MERIT award holder from NIH. Dr. Tsokos’ research focuses on the cellular and molecular pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). His laboratory has opened and led the field of molecular abnormalities on immune cells in patients with SLE. He directs a T32-sponsored fellowship on systemic autoimmunity and a Clinical Rheumatology Fellowship. Dr. Tsokos has trained over 110 colleagues many of whom hold senior leadership positions and run independent laboratories. His research is funded through NIH and DoD grants.

This is a classic book that what written by the D&D and the AD&D founder. This book as well as most of the first edition books are the best AD&D books that were ever written. The following books (second edition and the books that are being publish today) are nice but thay somehow took the charm out of the game - Instead of using your imagination you are being occupied with unnecessary rules and dice rolling. If you can find this book and other first edition books I truely suggest you would. This book plus the Monster Manual volume 2 are giving you more than enough coverage for an AD&D adventure, so you can leave the Monsters Compendium on the shelf.

When imagination was still part of the game..

This is THE book along with Monster Manual II for AD&D gaming. As a matter of fact, all of the books by Gygax were the best. Like one other review said, put on some Iron Maiden or other old school wicked tunes and enjoy. The artwork is amazing and darker than the new stuff, which is what made D&D so cool. I think this book inspired a lot of album covers and a great deal of imagination when playing this game. Miles above the new stuff, which is too colorful and p.c. Old school rules!

Sperling and DiDonno are also the authors of How to Redesign & Renovate Your House or Apartment.

Broadest coverage, patiently explained

It's not easy to cover such a huge subject, but these two architects do a remarkable job. The illustrator gets equal billing, and it's well-deserved, as the drawings alone are worth the price of the book. The best part is on design. I've never seen a book that allowed you to figure loads and size columns, or provided a worksheet to calculate heating requirements. The final section on construction is more of an overview but the important issues are always addressed. You'll need to supplement your reading, especially since newer technologies--housewrap, truss roofs, engineered lumber--are not covered, but everything in this book is useful.

Good Starter Book

As a person who is looking to build their own house the book provided a good start. It gave a great overview of how to design living area and incorporate ideas to the plan. As others have pointed out it is not current to todays innovations, however, it is a great start. I would use other construction type books to supplement the education received via this book. It also contains many formulas for calculating loads and other calcs for construction. I wish it covered more regarding slabs other than the crawl space one used in the example house that was being designed. It did go into detail about some of the more overlooked things in building a house - ie: stair and fireplace design. Overall, I don't think it would be for an experienced builder, however, it gives someone like me who does not know much about overall design and homebuilding a great start.

Many of the concepts are timeless but the edition I received was 15 years old and much of the technology and materials in house building have changed.
