Good book to have for getting a good overview of AIR but not that comprehensive

The title of this book seems very interesting but a little intimidating. "Breaking out of the Web Browser" provides a good understanding of the history of information systems and claims that AIR can supersede a web browser by overcoming its limitations by providing more and better features. This book is meant to be used by Web Developers who have a programming background preferably in Flex or Actionscript. The majority of content in this book is based on exploring a time tracker application which has its own pros and cons. In my opinion, it is a great book to start learning AIR although not that comprehensive in detail.

After starting to read this book, it seems to me that this book is more geared towards somebody who is a beginner in developing AIR Desktop applications. It sounds a little contradicting with the "Intermediate" book level printed on the back of this book. I do see that one requires an intermediate level of programming language to understand its contents.

The books starts with a good preface about the internet era going from the mainframe to the client-server model to the RIA development model. It also gives a good introduction about what AIR can do and provides are good entry into the subject. I am really not sure why the authors chose to base the book on a time tracker application. It is similar to a story telling approach but in this case I have already lost my interest to an extent due to the thought of developing an application which I have no desire to build. I think that having more examples would have made this book a much more interesting read.

The first chapter of this book allows a web developer familiar with HTML with JavaScript, Flash, or Flex to create AIR applications. Again, I do not know why the authors chose to develop the rest of the chapters of this book based on a time tracker applications for understanding the functionality of AIR. I can agree with the authors to a certain extent about why one needs a pretext to dive into the book but to me it doesn't seem to be helpful in the long run.

Chapter Two of the book explains how AIR can interact with the OS clipboard. I do not see the importance of including such a chapter towards the beginning of the book while I am trying to learn the basic functionalities AIR can provide. I am a beginner in AIR but I do have a moderate amount of flex experience. I can see why the time tracker application does require a clipboard interaction but it isn't that appealing in nature.

The flow of information from Chapter Four onwards is smooth and well maintained. Authors do an excellent job in explaining the drag and drop functionality in AIR, the benefits of using a SQLite database with direct access to the file system which according to me is a definite win over the web browsers due to their inability in interacting with the OS directly.

Chapter Seven is geared towards the general look and feel of the AIR application. I just love the idea of enabling applications to handle networking and user activity events in addition to having an auto-update feature using the AIR framework.

Chapter Nine explores the use HTML content in an AIR application. I am not sure why the authors chose not to mention that fact that all HTML tags are not supported by AIR application. It seems like they are advocating the use of AIR without providing its limitations. They starts off the chapter by mentioning that AIR uses the same HTML rendering engine as the Apple's Safari browser.

In the next chapters, authors do a good job of explaining several ways to interact with a web server for exchanging remote data using SOAP, REST, AMF, RTMP, and Sockets. Chapter Eleven continues to explain the benefits of using Adobe Blaze DS which provides an efficient and sophisticated mechanism to interact with server data. However, the introduction to Blaze DS is not up to the mark. It would have been helpful to include more visual representations of what Blaze DS can or cannot do.

Chapter Twelve includes details about using Fluint testing framework while Chapter Thirteen gives a good tutorial about deploying AIR applications. The book concludes by providing a understanding of the AIR security and conveying some best/worst practices approach for developing AIR applications.

This book could serve as a good introduction to a person having a good background in flex. Although the book is based on a time tracker application, an experienced flex programmer can start by choosing the chapter or topic of their choice. I think the book is great for getting a general idea of the features AIR provides but you are definitely looking at spending time on other books or tutorials available on the web to get the things going as you want.

Great book, definitely pick it up.

Breaking out of the browser with air is an excellent book. It provides a great overview of a ton of things one can do with Air. The book is not a comprehensive bible of every single thing you need to know, but that's one of its strong points. If I need to know the complete in's and out's of something I'll check the api docs and get my info there. The best thing this book does is give you a full understanding of whats available.

Another key point for me is that the book is good at showing what kinds of things a developer should keep in mind when it comes to making desktop apps rather than web apps. This is bigger than you would think for impacting user experience.

I went into this book with as3 knowledge, having worked on an air app prior and some flex knowledge. Coming out I know alot more things to watch out for and a heads up some some functionality I haven't used. There's also a ton of good snippets of code; just enough, to give you an idea of whats being discussed.

As far as frameworks go they take a look at using some commands and talk a little about how that plays into creating reusable code, always a plus in my book. I'm more of a PureMVC fan myself, and the code they present is a variation of adobe's Cairngorm.

Various places they make comments to elements in the adobe flex 3 training from the source book. I'm off to get a copy of that now as a good in depth how it works book.

This is definitely worth picking up especially if you are new to Air. Not overpoweringly long either.

Elrod Hits Every Note in this Symphony of Story

This is the world where **The Hanged Man** takes place, as we follow Alex Pendlebury (forensic psychic reader, daughter of a peer, and namesake of the queen) deep into a gaslamp adventure featuring dark magic, devious family, and layers of conspiracy.

Elrod uses every trick in her arsenal to weave a totally believable tale of magic grounded in Victorian England. We have wonderful characters, intriguing magic talents, and more deception than we can toss a cloak over. Everything has a second—and a third—meaning, and the plot twists are not over until the last paragraph.

If steampunk is your cuppa, and you love depth to your characters and story, this one is for you. Both fantasy and mystery, this tale will both give you everything you need to solve the game and also fool you until the end. Pick it up rather sooner than later. You won’t be disappointed.

I checked it out of the library, but I'll be buying my own copy--and I'm looking forward to Alex's next adventure!

In Which Miss Pendelbury Defends The Realm From Enemies Natural, And Supernatural.

Not exactly a Steampunk novel, more an alternative history, urban fantasy, supernatural themed mystery. Full of action and interesting characters, set in an alternative Victorian Great Britain, where Queen Victoria married an English nobleman instead of a German prince, and had a long, happy marriage instead of a long state of being a widow. Victoria in this history was a strong female character, who got women the right to vote in the 1840s, and established her empire through peaceful diplomacy, instead of letting her armies engage in empire building through military conquest. In addition, the Queen established a "Psychic Service", to deal with any threats to her realm from paranormal or supernatural sources. Miss Alex Pendelbury, the Queen's goddaughter, is one of these psychic investigators, who stumbles on a plot with both mundane and supernatural elements that endangers the Pax Brittania. She is aided by other members of Her Majesty's Psychic Service, including its director, Lord Richard, who will feel familiar to readers of P.N. Elrod's other series about THE KEEPER OF THE KING. It's a great crossover element from another fictional universe. There is plenty of action, and the plot is fast paced and involved. I believe this is the first book in what will be another series, and I look forward to seeing more of Miss Pendelbury and her cohort.

Buy this book! There are no spoilers in this review.

I try not to have spoilers in any of my reviews, but especially in this one as the author is less than fond of reviews with spoilers in them. There are so many good scenes and plot twists and such that it is hard to abstain. But a strong will and a sharp eye will prevail.

From the prologue:

"This special branch, Her Majesty's Psychic Service, dedicated to investigating all matters supernatural, employs the psychical gifts of those who serve in it to protect and preserve the realm. Here follows the story of one of her agents."

As I have said before, I feel that crossovers are the hardest type of story to do well. You have to please readers of both (or in this case, several) genres, so the story has to be exceptionally well done to be considered good. This book is good.

The writing is superb, the plot is well-crafted, the characters are interesting, the alternate world-building is deftly inserted into the story (and is intriguing!), and the pace is darn near perfect.

If I had not won the internal argument and convinced myself I actually was an adult with a job that started in too few hours, I would have read the entire book in a single sitting.

For those of you not familiar with my rating system, 5 stars means "Great book! Start hunting for more books by this author." In this case since I have already read the author's previous books, I will have to hope that this will be a series and that Book 2 of Her Majesty's Psychic Service is already being written.

An Excellent Overview Of Human Factors, Error Reduction, And Organizational Culture In The Chemical Processing Industry

The Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) has produced numerous excellent books for the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI), and this is one of the best of the bunch. I have worked as a Production Manager in a chemical manufacturing facility, have spent much of my life researching and teaching in aviation safety programs, and believe that not only do the majority of case studies, concepts, and conclusions drawn in this book apply to the CPI, but in many other technically oriented tightly-coupled industries as well.

The book commences with an excellent brief glossary and acronym list (pp. xvii-xxi). Most of the terms were familiar, but one that was new to me was "encystment", which is a characteristic of a human under stress, whereby the individual focuses on minor problems or details, while ignoring more important issues. This is similar to "target fixation" in military aviation, but perfectly encompasses a characteristic that has been a problem throughout technological systems, and has caused major accidents in the CPI, aviation, and elsewhere. In this discussion of human error, I took particular delight in a typo on p. 5, which introduced the topic: "Human rror [sic] is probably the major contributor to loss of life, injury to personnel and property damage in the CPI." While unintentional, this minor detail demonstrates that even in an extremely carefully prepared document, mistakes happen.

The book uses numerous excellent case studies throughout to illustrate principles, and spotlights organizational factors (p. 22ff) that are critical to safety, particularly emphasizing the importance of having a blame-free culture which encourages the flow of information, and an explicit policy that safety considerations are always primary. Chapter two "Understanding Human Performance and Error" is one of the strongest, and I especially found the discussion (p. 40ff) of types of errors and engineering approaches to them to be valuable; the table (p. 45) comparing the various perspectives on human error is an excellent reference. While discussing the sociotechnical perspective to human error (p. 86), the book boiled down the essence of an accident as succinctly as I have ever seen anywhere: "Studies of major accidents have shown that they almost always arise from a combination of active errors, latent failures and inappropriate culture."

Chapter three, "Factors Affecting Human Performance in the Chemical Industry", is also a gem. The discussion (p.103) of Performance-Influencing Factors (PIFs; a similar concept in the nuclear industry is that of Performance-Shaping Factors, PSFs) is an excellent introduction to factors that lead to error causation. Exploring the PIFs applicable to a job can go a long way toward defining the plans to reduce error. Characteristics of a good training program are detailed later in the chapter (p. 132), as are more intangible qualities of operator characteristics, including personality factors and suitability, risk-taking behavior, Locus of Control, and Risk Homeostasis Theory (RHT). The discussion of these personality traits (p. 135ff) is of great benefit to managers hiring, matching personnel to jobs, and to training managers in tailoring their programs to their employee group. Of particular note is the table on p. 151 detailing individual and cognitive phenomena under stress, which ties all the personality issues (encystment, thematic vagabonding, tunnel vision, stereotype takeover, etc.) together in an easy to use reference.

Chapter four, "Analytical Methods for Predicting and Reducing Human Error", is also useful, and requires slow, deliberate reading. Numerous predictive and reactive methodologies are explored, but one of the most useful discussions begins on p. 187 where Task Analysis (TA) methods are evaluated, and criteria for employing TA methods are listed. Chapter five deals with both qualitative and quantitative predictions of human error in risk assessment, and while packed with information, is not as universally applicable as chapter four. The Technique for Human Error Rate Prediction (THERP, discussed on p. 226ff) was developed for military and nuclear power users, and has wide-ranging applicability both within the CPI and in other industries, notably aerospace. Although I had seen similar methodologies elsewhere, I found THERP to be lucidly explained and easy to understand and employ.

Chapter six, "Data Collection and Incident Analysis Methods", is another excellent resource for the safety professional. I like the Accident Causation Model and diagram presented (p. 258), and agreed with their discussion of the cultural aspects of data collection system design (p. 259), which emphasize a blame-free safety culture, and freedom from fear of reprisals. Their use of the Space Shuttle "Challenger" disaster as an example of the disadvantages of a culture of blame was spot on. This segues into chapter seven, "Case Studies" nicely. The case studies presented here are all well-selected and nicely explained. I particularly commend the discussion of the Piper Alpha disaster (pp. 292-306), and recommend interested parties to read the unabridged findings of the Cullen commission in the two volume report (available from HMSO in the UK). I was especially enthusiastic about the STEP diagram of the hydrocarbon leak on pp. 300-303. While less newsworthy than Piper Alpha, the case study about Human Factors in resin processing, was also packed with excellent insight. I especially appreciated the discussion of SOP and checklist design on pp. 320-325. This closely paralleled my knowledge from aviation, and again serves to demonstrate the applicability of this work across multiple technically-oriented industries.

"Guidelines for Preventing Human Error in Process Safety" is a fascinating, detailed, and immensely useful book for safety professionals both in the CPI and in other industries with tightly-coupled complex processes (e.g. nuclear power, aerospace, etc.). I recommend this book highly and will keep it on my bookshelf within easy reach.

Just what you need to know!

A compelling case is presented in an easy to read format. Ms. Smith pulls information from well known scientists as well as local sources working in the food industry. Included are tips for avoiding GMOS while shopping for food, dining out, and traveling. She even includes some of her favorite recipes and a 30 day challenge to weed out some foods you may not know contain GMOS. I recommend Going Against GMOS for anyone seeking more information as well as those who may think they know all about them. Pass this book around or gift to those you care about.

As a concerned consumer who avoids GMOs, I was delighted to read a book on GMOs by a nutritionist and to discover how well she covered a very complex and multi-faceted issue. Folks new to the issue will find it easy to understand and follow. More knowledgeable readers will undoubtedly discover new and valuable information, i.e. the nongmo recipes.

I love the author's "Go GMO-Free Challenge

I learned so much from reading Melissa Diane Smith's Going Against GMOs! It's a fascinating look at just how real and pervasive genetically modified foods are in American foods. It motivated me to start paying attention to everything I buy and eat, even the food I feed my cats! I had no idea that many brands of pet foods are full of GMOs. I love the author's "Go GMO-Free Challenge," meal plans, and dining out suggestions. Because Melissa Diane Smith is a holistically oriented nutritionist, I found her nutritional guidance extremely useful (not canned, like that many 'conventional' nutritionists). And Smith has been a trailblazing nutritionist in her field. She was the coauthor of Syndrome X and author of Going Against the Grain and Gluten Free Throughout the Year (another one of my favorites!) ... these books were ahead of their time. If you've read any of these other books, you will really love this one. One last thing: The recipes in Going Against GMOs are delicious! And I loved them even more because they are easy to prepare (nothing too technical). I want to feel my best, and after reading this book, I know now that removing GMOs from my diet is a big part of that.

The revelation of that secret helps to explain not only the success of Artemis's cult and polytheism itself but, more surprisingly, the demise of both and the success of Christianity. Contrary to many anthropological and scientific theories, the history of polytheism, including the celebration of Artemis's mysteries, is best understood as a Darwinian tale of adaptation, competition, and change.

Great history

This is a very special book providing a very special focus on an ancient religious cult that had an immense following. If you want to understand the power of pagan religion in ancient times, this is a book for you. The author is a well-known professor of ancient Greece at Wellesley College who will engage you in a good read. He knows his subject, and as a true scholar of ancient history, brings to the table a deep knowledge of the peoples, languages and cultures of the time.

This is the book we wish we had for Eluesis ... But having it for Ephesus sheds great light on Greek religion as well. This work has scholarly depth, but anyone interested in behind the scenes mystery religion will find a great deal of benefit here.

For someone who is fascinated by Ephesus, there is information about the city, its buildings and streets. There is biographical information on some of the families and individuals who were among the leaders of the city.
