Originally from Cuba, Ali Vali has retained much of her family’s traditions and language and uses them frequently in her stories. Having her father read her stories and poetry before bed every night as a child infused her with a love of reading, which carries till today. In 2000, Ali decided to embark on a new path and started writing. She has discovered that living in Louisiana and running a non-profit provides plenty of material to draw from in creating her novels and short stories. Mixing imagination with different life experiences, she creates characters that are engaging to the reader on many levels. Ali states that "The feedback from readers encourages me to continue to hone my skills as a writer."
Carsen Taite (Author)
Lambda Literary Award finalist Carsen Taite is on a mission: spin tales with plot lines as interesting as the true, but often unbelievable stories she encountered in her career as a criminal defense law yer. She is the author of numerous short stories and over a dozen novels.
Michelle Grubb (Author)
Michelle is Tasmanian born and now resides in the UK, just north of London. She relishes outdoor and travel adventures with her wife, writes by the seat of her pants, and often lives life by the same philosophy. She believes that life is about opportunities: You choose to take them or you don’t. Someone far more famous than her once said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got.” Motivated by this, Michelle likes to explore opportunities that come her way. The urge to write seemingly stalked Michelle until she finally succumbed in her mid-thirties. Surprise was her initial reaction, but now the author title inspires her on a daily basis.

Entertaining Read

Short stories can be challenging. You need memorable characters, a plot which grabs the reader's interest and ends with a satisfactory resolution all in the space of a few normal chapters. The word count is your enemy and your friend. Novella's give the author a bit more time to develop their characters and plot but there are word count restraints forcing the writer to keep it simple yet hold the reader's interest.
Some authors go with characters they have used in the past, making their short story a 0.5 contribution to their continuing series. Others come up with entirely new characters and snapshots of time and place in their original tales. Entering into Girls with Guns I assumed that our leading ladies would be well armed. After that I was open to whatever these three seasoned authors would create for our reading pleasure.
Carsen Taite does not disappoint with Bow and Arrow. Her rough tough bounty hunter Luca Bennett is hot on the trail of rogue bad cop Teresa Perez. She is seeking revenge for both her girlfriend Jess and her own treatment at the hands of the now notorious drug runner. Luca has a Colt 45 and is not afraid to use it. Perez is also being hunted by the Mexican mafia she has double crossed. Just as Luca receives tips on possible Perez sitings she is called up for jury duty. Adapting to her new domestic arrangement with Jess, dealing with over eager juror Cris and tracking Perez keeps Bennett on the run. Add in Luca's loveable and well trained husky and Bow and Arrow is an entertaining fast paced read.
Michelle Grubb's Hammersmith is more novella than short story.
Belinda Reilly, recently assigned to the Hotstream task force is charged with protecting passengers riding the London Underground from urban terrorists. Her training and ability to blend with morning commuters allow her to spot potential suicide bombers or “cleaners”. Bel takes her new role and her Glock 17 very seriously. Nights of passion with her girlfriend Esther make her dangerous day job bearable.
I really enjoyed reading Hammersmith and appreciated the mini-course on suspect identification presented in entertaining fashion as Bel observes her fellow riders on their morning commute. Urban terrorism is our new reality and the city of London has experienced its share of violence. Fiction done well opens the possibilities that MI5 might just have highly trained squads of agents monitoring the CCTV and public transit riders on a daily basis. Grubb writes believable fiction. When background info ramps up to full blown tension the reader is pulled into the train with Bel. Foreshadowing made me feel like a super sleuth thinking I had everything figured out until the author threw in some unexpected twists and left me relegated to spectator status. Good fun.
Ali Vali's Hell Fire began with great promise. Finley Abbott is an FBI hacker on loan to the NYPD to help uncover a sex slave ring operating in the city. The stakes are raised when a group of sex slaves are gunned down and the massacre is witnessed by Abigail Eaton and her children. Finley is forced into protection duty as the eye witness to the slaying becomes a target.
The story is long relative to the others in this anthology and I think it had the makings of a entertaining full length romantic intrigue/ police procedural. As a novella it felt choppy and unfinished. Finley is an interesting character with a background only hinted at but slowly revealed. She is resourceful, brave and married to her job, perfect for the recently widowed Abigail and her children.
Hell Fire didn't work for me. It has an ambitious what if scenario but the story is poorly executed thanks I assume to the need to condense scenes to fit into a novella format. Like Orcs in Lord of the Rings, the bad guys are just too easy to kill. We don't have enough time to get to know key people in the story and threads and threats are left hanging without resolution. I did like the relationship between Abigail, her kids and Finley. Their scenes were highlights and kept me interested and reading. Fin's weapon of choice in the final scene was straight out of a gangster movie and more cringe-worthy than clever.
Like most anthologies, Girls with Guns has stories I loved and stories which were okay. A nice mix.

I received a copy of this book from Inked Rainbow Reads in return for an honest review.
I was really pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this anthology. Each of the three stories dealt with law and order, as well as the criminally inclined, but each also exposed a softer side to characters who could've been hardened by what they've seen and experienced. It also showcased each author's style, and while different, the three stories seemed very complementary to me.
The first story was Bow and Arrow by Carsen Taite. I don't think I've read anything by her before, although I keep hovering over that "buy" button. I'm not sure I actually liked Luca. Although she genuinely seemed to love Jess, she struggles to allow herself to be vulnerable, even seeing the admission of feelings to be somehow weak. Her feeling that being in a relationship, even one she likes and doesn't want to give up, somehow makes her soft, leads her to make choices that could cause her trouble in that relationship down the road. I did, however, love her declaration for Valentine's Day at the end. This will probably get me to actually click that button the next time I'm looking for a good read.
Next is Hammersmith by Michelle Grubb. Bel and Esther have a very amorphous relationship, and it's one that makes me question whether Bel really knew Esther much at all. That totally plays into what happens at Bel's job one day, looking for threats to public safety on the London Underground. Grubb definitely had me wondering the whole story, and I definitely didn't see the twist coming, so kudos to Ms. Grubb for a wonderfully suspenseful tale.
Last is Ali Vali's Hell Fire. A lot seems to happen in a very short time for Abigail and her kids, and the only safe port in this storm seems to be Finley, who's stepped forward to keep the small family safe and alive. In her quest to find out who has targeted Abigail, Finley gets closer and closer to the brave woman and her children, but Finley has a past of her own, a past that her law enforcement employers might have a problem with. Can Finley use that part of her life to help Abigail? And if so, at what cost? Definitely an interesting read, and it reminds me that I need to go finish Cain Casey's series.
So, strong female characters, who know how to use a gun and who know that justice and law sometimes don't go together, make this three story anthology a great read for anyone who loves crime stories. Definitely a good addition to anybody's library.

Kick-ass women, thrills, and sexy scenes

If you’re unfamiliar with their work (or even if you aren’t, and you just need a fix!), Girls With Guns is a great introduction to the work and worlds of Michelle Grubb, Carsen Taite, and Ali Vali.
In Carsen Taite’s Bow and Arrow, we meet a bounty hunter by the name of Luca Bennett. I have to admit, I didn’t like Luca right away. She seemed determined to do the wrong thing just to do it, and had a bad streak half-a-mile wide. But as the story progressed, I saw that Luca was more than a bounty hunter shirking responsibility for cash: she was on a mission close to her heart. Add in one really adorable dog and a stint in jury duty, and this was a great story.
If I had to describe Hammersmith by Michelle Grubb in one word, I’d use passionate. Officer Belinda Riley is on the trail of a suicide bomber, and the ugly feeling in her gut tells her the culprit is closer than anyone thinks. With a healthy dash of sex and adrenaline, this story hits the mark.
Though I liked them all, Hell Fire was my favorite of these three stories. Finley Abbott is one Special Agent I want to get to know better! When she risked everything to save the life and family of naive but courageous Dr. Abigail Eaton, I melted. As the story progressed, I couldn’t believe how deep the evil of the sex trafficking empire went – and who was behind it all.
