Another Brilliant Journey with Finn MacCullen

Once again, author Darby Karchut shows off her amazing knack for building on each installment of a series, making each book better than the last.

In the Adventures of Finn MacCullen series, Ms. Karchut hasn’t struck a bad note yet, but the third book—“The Hound at The Gate”—surpasses even its two predecessors.

The first two novels mainly focus on the relationship between apprentice Finn “Don’t Call Me Finnegan” MacCullen and his Knight, Gideon Lir. We watch as Finn struggles to learn all the skills required to make him a full-blown knight in the ancient Tuatha De Danaan realm.

The first novel—“Finn Finnegan”—shows Finn’s early training, and the dangers that surround this world so new to Finn. The second novel—“Gideon’s Spear”—shows Finn come into his own, gaining confidence and skill, and showing the traits that will make him a brave warrior in his own right.

In the third installment, “The Hound at The Gate,” Ms. Karchut shifts gears a bit. Rather than focusing solely on Gideon and Finn, she gives us a glimpse into the entire Tuatha De Danaan world.

The location is The Festival, a gathering of Tuatha De Danaan from all over. It’s a sort of ancient warrior Woodstock, with feasts, music, and challenges, a chance for Knights and Apprentices to renew old friendships, and—especially for Gideon and Finn—some old rivalries.

Also attending The Festival—crashing the gates is more like it—are the Amandan, fierce goblin-like creatures whose favorite food happens to be Tuatha De Danaan.

Things turn ugly early, as certain people question Finn’s right to attend The Festival, since he comes from a Knight father and a mortal mother. This internecine tension crackles throughout “The Hound at The Gate,” as if the Amandan weren’t enemy enough.

Repeatedly, Finn finds himself locked in combat for his life and that of his friends.

And those were the good times.

On one night of The Festival, the unthinkable happens. A massive army of Amandan force the Tuatha De Danaan to retreat. Things look hopeless. Only incredible bravery by a handful of Knights stands between being vanquished or living to see another morning.

As the battle winds down, Finn becomes embroiled in yet another quarrel regarding his status, this time due to his uniqueness, not his difference. At stake is his future as a trainee, and the chance that he could be forever separated from his beloved mentor, Gideon.

I can’t stress enough how much of a page-turner “The Hound at The Gate” is. I’ve learned better than to start one of Ms. Karchut’s novels before bedtime, since I know I’ll read all night, and never get any sleep.

As interesting as the lives of the Tuatha De Danaan are in the first two novels, “The Hound at The Gate” gives us a broader glimpse into this mythical world. We see the alliances and rivalries within the group. We learn about the hierarchy and ruling body, and we see all of these things disappear when the Amandan mount a full-scale attack. Knights and apprentices work together, regardless of position or personal feelings. There’s a job to do, and each is prepared to defend the group to his or her dying breath.

I say “his or her” advisedly, because one of the highlights in this novel is the introduction of a feisty female Knight named Kel, and her equally feisty apprentice. Needless to say, these two women leave Gideon and Finn utterly flummoxed, even as they more than prove themselves equals to the men in the group.

Ms. Karchut does a wonderful job providing rich description, setting a visual stage against which the battle will be fought. Then she lets fly with the action.

“The Hound at The Gate” is my favorite thus far of the “Adventures of Finn MacCullen” series, primarily because of the expanded view it gives of the warrior group. While the action is plentiful and powerful, I like the quieter moments as well. Here, we see the people behind the flashing daggers and swinging axes. We can see our own groups mirrored in the Tuatha De Danaan, with all of humankind’s foibles, strengths, and weaknesses.

We also see how all of Gideon’s training has rubbed off on Finn. Not just on the battlefield, but in other areas as well.

Like the rest of The Adventures of Finn MacCullen series, “The Hound at The Gate” is classified as a “middle-grade” book. Also like the rest of the series, “The Hound at The Gate” serves as an excellent read for adults, too.

My only complaint is that Ms. Karchut is making us wait till 2016 for the next installment. That’s a long time to wait for such an exciting series.

Much to love about this book!

What can I say? I am in love with Finn, he is like the little brother that I didn’t know I always wanted. Again, I am really impressed with Darby, and she has proved once again why I say she is a D.E.A.R. author. But I don’t want to spend too much time on her, just take my word for it, she is awesome.

This is the third book in the series, and there is so much that I like about it. First it is rich with Celtic tradition and mythology. But, more than that, it is rich with family and growth. If you are just hearing about this series, and this title let me tell you what you find. There is humor and sarcasm, Finn and Gideon are such a pair, and I have to remind myself that they have not always been together. Lochlan and Finn run into the same trouble that young boys often do. There’s fighting-lots of fighting. I wish that the fight between Gideon and Tully had not been cut short, maybe that would have prevented the damaged he caused at the end, but probably not. The Amandan are out in bold numbers, and trying new and bolder moves. They have gotten stronger, forcing the knights to remind the creatures why the knights should be feared. The festival brings them all together and introduces us to a few new characters, and I am looking forward to seeing more of them.

For those who have read the first two books and want to know what’s different in this book–There is a good side to Martin O’Neill. I think I spent most of my time like Lochlan, not really liking Martin (Lochlan’s dad) but also not completely understanding him. It may take forever but in the end Martin redeems himself a bit, and things happen (another character’s insight) that makes me understand his nature. I hope that this continues into the next book, so we can see more.

On the flip side, Ennis, Finn’s cousin, also shows progress. While, I can’t say having a horrible master is an excuse for such bitterness, I am avid believer in we manifest in us whatever is encouraged and cajoled out of us. Ennis is an example of that. But, events that happen at the festival shows me two things. Ennis is really a strong leader, when given the opportunity and he would shine on the light side if he was an apprentice to a master that didn’t feed his negative side so much.

Finn. My boyo, also has some growth in this adventure. He is turning out to be such a swell lad. Even though I have never been a Tween boy, I remember what it was like in middle school and how everything seems to be changing so fast and in ways that leaves you spinning in confusion. I think that this transition is captured accurately with Finn, and that makes him a hero that boys can relate to.

Finn and Gideon’s relationship is tested in this book. The bond between them is growing, and you can see this not just at the end when they be separated, but throughout the whole book.

Great Adventure for Middle Graders (and Librarians)

This third adventure of Finn MacCullen finds him thirteen and beginning to notice girls as potential girlfriends. He is feeling more comfortable with Gideon as a teacher and mentor. They are building a very strong relationship.

Finn and Gideon are going to a Festival which gathers the Tuatha De Danaan to celebrate the fall equinox. Of course, there are hurdles. One of the ruling council doesn't want to admit Finn because he is half human. Also, an old enemy of Gideon's is attending with his apprentice who just happens to be a cousin of Finn's who spent a lot of time bullying him when Finn lived with his family.

The Festival starts out with a variety of fights as Finn battles with his cousin Ennis and Gideon battles Jack Tully, Ennis's mentor. And as those battles end, the Amandén show up in force. The book is filled with battles. Luckily, Gideon's friend Mac Roth and his apprentice Lochlan are along to help. They also meet Knight Kel O'Shea and her new apprentice Tara Butler. Gideon is attracted to Kel but neither Lochlan or Finn want to have anything to do with the abrasive and quick-tempered Tara. Finn has a very unfortunate first meeting with Tara that leaves him with his foot deep in his mouth. Lochlan especially has taken her in dislike; whereas Finn is willing to be polite. Lochlan and Finn have their disagreements too. Lochlan is determined to kill a goblin to win his torc. He needs to do this to alleviate the pressure his father, a council member, is putting on him. But it seems like Finn has to step in and save his life each time he gets near killing his first goblin.

Gideon, Finn, Mac Roth and Lochlan have been keeping a secret about Finn. That secrets comes out during the largest battle with the Amandén (goblins) which leads to a very hard decision. Finn's legendary status may mean that he will have to leave Gideon.

I can't wait to read the next adventure and share these adventures with my students.

Sports Nuts

The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types by Ray Heitzmann is a great informational book. The book tells about occupations in the athletic department. For example the book describes jobs like physical therapy, coaching, sports communication and much more. This book is more for high school students who want to go into athletics for an occupation. I believe this book is a great book. I choose this book because I want to go into athletics; this book helped me narrow my choices.

The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types reminds me of the lawyers in Inherit the Wind. In Inherit the Wind the lawyers are very successful. For example one of t he charters ran for president three times. I also recommend reading Inherit the Wind.

Great profile tool to understand human behavior

This is a wonderful book; Mr. Crosby does a great job portraying the challenges we experience from childhood to adulthood to understand others, we go by life wondering why someone acts the whey they do, I realized that despite the different experiences in life we have similar questions regarding behavior and mutual understanding. As an HR professional it has changed my point of view about this concept of leaving your life at home and don’t bring it to work. We are not a separate self; we might put a mask to function at our work life, act differently with our families and friends. As an HR professional often times I wondered what if it would be a system that would allow you to measure all these aspects of life in a candidate to make sure I was hiring the right fit for our company, PDP is that system. It is a very accurate tool not only in the human resources arena but also at a personal level, is always good to know yourself and others. The system is not only a hiring tool but a tool to understand others and make any organization function more efficiently and in harmony.

An unimaginable, life-changing story

My long-time close friend Don Crosby mailed one of his first copies of The Why You Do signed as a gift.
The book rested on my coffee table for weeks before my son Allen, came home and picked it up questioning where it came from and if he could borrow the book. Allen was lost within himself like so many other young adults, he had quit college and was working different jobs to occupy his time; my family and I observed his wandering and searching and as a father it broke my heart to see my son with academic potential without purpose. Something inside my 26-year-old son was missing and then, he read The Why You Do from cover to cover, which helped him unlock barriers of junk that was mentally holding him hostage. He realized he was Ok just the way he is and he began to approve of himself. Then he went online to Don’s website and bought a ProScan assessment (which is impressive because he has so little money) and studied the document while remembering his affirmation. The process of the book was the beginning of opening his heart and mind, then the ProScan report provided Allen the fresh clarity and understanding which filled in the blanks. Through this process he gained the realization he needed to help people. He made the commitment, bought the books and studied very hard for the M-Cat test for Medical School, and then, he scored a 100%. When I asked him what happened he told me his new ambition was because of how the book simply made so much sense, he understands more about himself and now he knows he can become a medical doctor. This seems to be an unimaginable, life-changing story and to see my son happy and passionate with a fulfilling career is priceless. Now, I’m telling everyone about my friend, Don Crosby the man who inspired my son, Allen Brook's new direction of his life with testimony "The Why You Do"…it Works.

Why Does It Matter?

Why I do what I do has been something people have been wanting to know for years. Don Crosby has done a fantastic job in unlocking this question and helping me really understand it. I think it is something we all give thought to from time to time as it relates to our own behavior. I believe that gets answered here, but just as importantly I think knowing the 'why it matters' is powerful. Knowing why I do what I do is sort of fascinating but knowing why and how it matters allows me to use this wisdom in my relationships at home and in my business. I am finding that my why is what has allowed me to very successful with some and not others and what I can do about it. If you want to know why you do what you do, but just as importantly why it matters, then I can HIGHLY RECOMMEND this read to you. I wish you well in your journey.

About the Author
Thomas D. Parsons, PhD is a Clinical Neuropsychologist and Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of North Texas. Prior to joining the faculty at UNT, he was an Assistant Professor and Research Scientist at the University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technologies. His work integrates neuropsychology and simulation technologies for novel assessment, modeling, and training of neurocognitive and affective processes. He is a leading scientist in this area and he has directed 17 funded projects during his career and he has been an investigator on an additional 13 funded projects. In addition to his patents for the eHarmony.com Matching System, he has invented and validated virtual reality-based assessments of attention, spatial abilities, memory, and executive functions. He uses neural networks and machine learning to model mechanisms underlying reinforcement learning, decision making, working memory, and inhibitory control. He has over 100 publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters. His contributions to neuropsychology were recognized when he received the 2013 National Academy of Neuropsychology Early Career Achievement award. In 2014, he was awarded Fellow status in the National Academy of Neuropsychology.

The fifth edition of Practical Horticulture marks over 20 years that the book has been in print, as well as a major turning point in broadening the text. It was originally conceived as a university text for nonmajors courses in horticulture with the idea that the students would acquire a sound (if limited) foundation in aspects of horticultural science such as physiology, nomenclature, anatomy, growth and development, and so on (Part 1). In addition to this, they would learn of the applications of the principles of horticulture to home horticulture both outdoors (Part 2) and indoors (Part 3)—applications that might eventually be useful in their lives after university.

But the clarity and readability of the text, combined with the great number of instructional photos and illustrations, have brought it to the attention of horticulture instructors who teach this course in a myriad of ways and at a variety of levels.

For this reason, in the fifth edition I have chosen to not only update but to broaden the text, keeping the basic core horticultural science in Part 1, but enhancing it with more information about the profession of horticulture and with descriptions of the techniques in commercial production horticulture. You will find the following improvements in this substantially revised fifth edition.

• A new section with the current (but ever-changing) definition of what a "plant" is in the light of modern investigation into the genetic relationships among earth's organisms
• A list of the national and international professional organizations for the specializations within horticulture, and a list of trade and professional journals
• An introduction to ethics in horticulture, and an example of one professional organization's ethical guidelines
• Sections on commercial production technology for container-grown landscape plants, bedding plants, field vegetables, high-density tree fruit production, commercial seed production, and greenhouse pot plants.

In addition, there is new material in the text on safety in regard to the mixing and application of pesticides, pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables, and power landscape maintenance equipment. A sample pesticide label diagram (in the form required by the Environmental Protection Agency) and a summary of national legislation over the past 30 years in regard to pesticides in agriculture have been included also.

Allied information on nonchemical pest and disease control and the increasing role of beneficial insects (with photos of some of them in action), a table of biological control agents such as nematodes and predator wasps, and a section on fungicidal inoculants for prevention of root diseases round out this enhancement.

The soils chapter has been enlarged to include sections on the role of soil organisms in plant growth, disussions of field capacity and matric potential in irrigation, current and traditional soil conservation techniques, and a traditional soil texture diagram.

Excellent resource and teaching tool (if you don't need additional assistance).

This book makes either an excellent teaching resource or a good personal reference book. I got it for teaching horticulture to my niece and ended up spending hours reading for my own personal benefit! There is one drawback. In the early pages of the book, reference is made to additional material (for teaching) which can be obtained from the Pearson's website. This material is NOT available to anyone who does not purchase the book through that website. However, when my sister attempted to purchase 1 copy of the book through the aforementioned website, there was no way to do so. Therefore, in effect, this supplemental material is NOT available to anyone who is NOT teaching in an accredited college...although the book could be taught to someone at the Junior and senior level of high school! In fact, I spent over 5 hours on the phone (being transferred from one department to another) before being told (on the website)that, although the supplemental material is available to home-schooling parents) that, in reality, it is NOT available!

If you are looking for an excellent book on horticulture, this is an excellent resource. If you are looking for an excellent textbook on the subject, it is also excellent. However, you must be prepared to go it on your own with the book as you will get NO HELP from Pearson's!

Cherri, please sing for me.

We return five years after the events in Summer Secret (Cherri Red #1). Dani Walker is leading a simple, luxurious life on the cliff-side of Dana Point with her camp buddy and now boyfriend, Jack. Jack has taken over his father's boating sales business and Dani is a leisure and famous photographer. However, everything isn't as crystal clear as it seems. Dani glances Cherri on the cover of a rock magazine and she pines over the loss of a deep relationship. Where is Cherri now and why hasn't she called?

Cherri Red is an upcoming debut artist in a country-rock band. Her first album is out and she has become an overnight celebrity. With tour stops all over the country and being a fan favorite, Cherri has a lot on her plate. In Summer Secret we left off with Cherri engaging in some unfavorable acts to try and make her way into the world with no support. However, the sequel does not divulge Cherri's secrets or just how far she went to breakthrough. Hopefully we will learn Cherri's story in the final installment of this trilogy.

The plot quickly progresses as Dani lands a corportate photography job and lands near a city where Cherri's tour stops. Despite her reservations, Dani heads off the the concert to spy on her long lost love. Cherri and Dani reunite and Dani is given a backstage pass (and not only to the concert). Letting go of her hurt and past betrayal does have its consequences as Dani's feelings have returned stronger than ever for Cherri.

The plot of this book also centers around the trial of Greg. Dani and Cherri are both called as witnesses to the event which took place at the end of book one. Here Dani and Cherri's trysts are put on public blast and each learn how to move forward now that their sexuality is public knowledge.

I enjoyed the character development in this book as Dani and Cherri are both dynamic characters and have matured since book one. Dani discovers a box hidden by her father and its contents lead Dani to stop feeling shame for her proclivities and the courage to pursue what SHE wants. Cherri has also grown from an attention-seeking, overly sexed young adult to an alluring and charismatic woman. She treats her fans well and shows great restraint when in the public eye.

I struggled with what to rate this book because I have enjoyed the adventures of both Dani and Cherri but compared to the first book this one just didn't deliver as I had hoped. The major problem for me was a lack of consistency. Some events from the last book are portrayed differently in the character's memories and I was confused a great deal at times. For example, a client of Dani's is called Crystal and then three pages later her name is suddenly Candy with no mention of a nickname. As a reader this was very frustrating.Overall, it was a good read and I will still pick up the final book to see if Dani and Cherri have a happily ever after.

A great sequel

Falling was a very entertaining continuation from the first Cherry Red book. The characters Dani and Cherry are so appealing and the people around them are realistic and interesting. I would be very happy to see another story out of this.
